Willie Mays is an in-house baseball program intended for children in their second to sixth year of baseball and currently attending 3rd, 4th or 5th grade. Exceptions can be made for younger players with advanced skills. Players must be 10 years old or younger on April 30th 2021 so only some 5th graders will qualify. Pitching and the catcher position are introduced at this level and other more advanced skills.
Play will be Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 pm. Practices are held at Clearview Elementary and begin in mid April (weather permitting). Games begin in late May and home games are at Clearview Elementary and away games are in Becker or Big Lake. Coaches may offer additional practices or scrimmages beyond the typical Tuesday and Thursday playing times. Games are 2 hours maximum or a maximum six innings. Players are typically asked to arrive 30 mins early for games. A season-ending tournament will take place at Clearview Elementary approximately the third weekend in July.
At this level players pitch to the opposing team. Base stealing is not allowed. Half innings last until 3 outs are made or 5 runs are scored. A pitcher may pitch a maximum of 6 outs or until they walk 5 batters in the same inning.
Players will receive a hat and jersey. Team batting helmets are provided. Grey baseball pants (any style), red socks and cleats are the parents responsibility. Bring a glove. Bats are available to share or bring your own.
