2019 Junior Summer Sculling Programs

Meet our coaches

  • Mike Van Beuren: Mike van Beuren has coached sweep and sculling since the 1990s. As a rowing athlete, he represented the USA abroad as a Junior sweep rower. Later in life, Mike became a multi-year National Champion single sculler and set a number of World and National age-group records on the Concept2 ergometer. He lives in Hartland with his wife Mary who is also a sculler.
  • Sophie Bartels: Sophie learned to row with the Hanover High School crew team, and continued on to row four years at Colby College. She returned to Hanover to work as a research coordinator on a mental health project in Colombia, and started coaching the UVRF-Lebanon Crew varsity girls’ team in the spring of 2018. She has loved having the opportunity to coach this awesome team, and has also helped with novice, master’s, and fall crew rowing.
  • Carin Reynolds Carin learned to row in 1982 during her sophomore summer at Dartmouth College. Two years later she moved on to the U.S. Lightweight Women's National Rowing Team, and won a gold medal at the World Championships in 1984. She has competed and medaled nationally and internationally in both sweep and sculling boats at Nationals, Worlds, the Goodwill Games, the World University Games and the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta. Carin coached the Dartmouth Novice women from 1986-88, then took 10 years off. She returned to the UV and to coaching in 1999 with the Hanover High Program, then founded the UVRF-Lebanon Crew middle and high school in 2010, where she continues to head the program and coach novice and varsity sweep and sculling.
  • Erika Dade Erika got hooked on rowing in the 1980s while in graduate school in Oregon. Later in Seattle, she rowed and competed for Lake Washington Rowing Club. Following a decade of living abroad, she moved to the Upper Valley in 2003, and returned to rowing and competing, both sweeps and sculls, with UVRF. Erika has been assistant Novice Girls coach at Hanover High since 2011 and served on the UVRF Board for 8 years  (the last 3 as President).
  • Casey Kelsey: Casey learned to row in high school at St. Paul's, rowed at Brown, and now is Head Coach of Girl's Crew at Choate.
  • Joe Jones: Due to an injury I was forced to transition from a competitive running program to rowing in 2016. That year I progressed through UVRF novice, club, and masters programs. I have been training and racing with the masters since.

Junior Sculling

In sculling, each rower holds 2 oars and rows in small boats. UVRF owns many sculling boats, including singles (one person), doubles (2 person), and quads (4 person) that are available to club members under certain conditions. If you are already a sweep rower, sculling is an excellent way to develop boat feel, balance and technical skills.

In addition to the programs listed below, which are exclusively for juniors turning 14 through 19 years old in 2021, the club offers Learn-to-Scull clinics for first-time rower-scullers and Free Sweep-to-Scull clinics for experienced sweep rowers.

Junior Club Members have the privilege of using club singles and doubles throughout the summer season on their own IF they have the requisite level of certification following the club sculling policies, and do at least one of the following:

  • pay the Club Sculling Equipment Fee, offered to juniors at $100 for the entire season
  • register for a Sweep Program (Leb Crew)
  • Fall Junior Racing
  • register for a Junior Sculling Clinic or a Learn-to-Scull Program (must become a member after program, if not already one)
  • register for Intermediate Coached Sculling Sessions
  • pay for rented rack space.

For more information on club sculling policies and procedures, please visit the sculling section of the UVRF website. If you have questions about junior programs at UVRF, please ask your reps or email the club.
