2021 Sculling Programs

Learn to Scull Clinics

This 2 x 1 ½ hour program is designed for beginning rowers who would like to learn sculling (rowing with two oars). Participants will use UVRF’s recreational rowing shells, which are the most stable in the water. The sessions will focus on boat handling, building skills and gaining confidence. During the first class, participants will learn the basics of the rowing shell and oars, the rowing stroke, and the rules of the river, with each person taking a turn to row a small amount. During the second class, participants will have time to practice and receive on-water instruction. Four clinics are planned for early June. More will be scheduled as needed during the summer. Membership in UVRF is not required for the Learn-to-Scull clinics and the clinics are open to juniors and adults, ages 14 and up.

Junior/U23 Sculling

The Upper Valley Rowing Foundation Junior/U23 Sculling program is open to all UVRF rowers who have completed at least one novice rowing program at UVRF or elsewhere, or who have prior rowing experience at the club or collegiate level, and are under 23 years of age (or still in college).  Those who want to learn to scull, to improve their rowing skills through sculling, and/or who express interest in competition are all welcome.

This is an opportunity to train in small boats (1x, 2x) and big boats (4x) with a focus on maximizing technique. Experienced sweep rowers owers with minimal or no sculling or small boat experience will come away with confidence in small boats by the end of the summer. Those who are interested in fitness in preparation for summer (1k/2k) and fall (5k) racing seasons will find a rigorous program available tailored to their skill levels. Everyone can expect to have fun and to improve boat handling skills which will transfer to sweep rowing or continued sculling training. Minimum number of participants - 6

This year's Jr/U23 sculling program is divided into four two-week sessions. Join for one session or all four. Each session will be stand-alone. However, rowers who sign up for multiple sessions will follow an ongoing progression of skill and technical work rather than repeating a one time 2-week format. All programs will take place at the Kendal waterfront site. Program fees for each session are noted below. Rowers will be responsible for racing entry fees, to be determined in advance of each regatta, should the opportunity to compete arise during each session. (Financial Aid - UVRF Scholarships are available upon confidential application. Just email   to receive info and an application form.)
