McLean Select Basketball ("MSB") is a member club of the FCYBL and is the select basketball program offered by McLean Youth Basketball. MSB fields two teams in each of the four boys and girls age groups, for a total of 16 teams.
General background. Gerry played high school basketball, baseball and soccer in Hamburg, NY and graduated from the College of William and Mary, worked as a CPA and serves as the Chief Financial Officer of KaBOOM! - a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to ensuring that all kids get a childhood filled with the balanced and active play needed to thrive. Gerry’s three grown children all played in the McLean basketball program.
Coaching experience. Coach Megas has been coaching select basketball in McLean for the past 16 years (the last 13 at the 8th grade level) and has over 20 years of basketball coaching experience. He was named the FYCBL 8th grade Division 1 coach of the year in 2014-15 and the 8th grade division 2 coach of the year in both the 2012-2013 and the 2008-2009 seasons. .In 2016 his 8th grade division 1 team placed 1st in the league and during the 2011-2012 season his 8th grade division 1 team played in the Championship game. His 8th grade division 2 teams won the league championship in the 2013-2014 and the 2010-2011 seasons.
Coaching philosopohy. Coach Megas' coaching goals and philosophy include preparing the girls to play high school basketball - have fun, compete hard and be integral members of a team. Commitment to the team and teammates is very important. Gerry likes to play an up tempo transition game combined with man to man defense and encourages his players to develop their one on one skills and have confidence to attack the basket. He places a lot of emphasis on skill development and also helps his players appreciate the mental part of the game.
Assistant Coaches John Welsh. John Welsh has over 20 years of experience coaching youth sports in McLean including basketball, soccer and softball. John has served as a head coach for 8 seasons in the McLean HS Basketball Recreation League and assisted Gerry the last 9 years with his 8th grade teams. John and Gerry have coached together since their daughters were in 4th grade. John's daughter, Kelly is a graduate of Georgetown University and his son, Connor, is now a senior at the University of Charleston
John graduated from Villanova University, and is an intellectual property attorney with Welsh Flaxman & Gitler. John believes that youth sports should be fun, but he also is a firm believer in teamwork and effort. He encourages his players to compete and enjoys watching them progress and contribute.
