John Rowan is the head coach for the Gladiators. Coach Rowan played college lacrosse at the University of Delaware and - over 20 years later - still plays year round competitive lacrosse at the masters division level. He has coached youth lacrosse in Smithtown since 2007 and is well known in Long Island lacrosse circles. Coach Rowan guided the Gladiators to 6 tournament championships in 2012 - each in the highest bracket of their age group! (see Trophy Case tab above)
Coach John’s philosophy is to develop each player’s physical skills, while at the same time enhance their mental understanding of the game and how it’s played. This philosophy is based upon the fundamentals of team lacrosse coupled with position specific skill development. Coach John’s teaching style on and off the field embodies the Gladiator core values of responsibility, respect, hard work, integrity, sportsmanship and teamwork. He feels his obligation to the players is to not only advance their lacrosse skill levels, but to build them into productive members of the community. Coach Rowan has completed accredited educational programs offered by the American Coaching Academy, US Lacrosse, and the Positive Coaching Alliance.
