Summit Girls Fast Pitch Softball (SGFS) Leagues

In December 2001, SJBB and the Summit Board of Recreation agreed to transfer the Board of Recreation's girls softball program to Summit Junior Baseball.  There were a number of reasons for this transfer.  In particular was SJBB's desire to bring its 31 years of experience running a top notch baseball program to bear to develop a quality girls fast pitch softball program for Summit.

In 2001 SJBB reviewed and repositioned the girls softball program.  The program was expanded to include second grade, and partnerships with surrounding towns were explored.  In 2004, Summit  joined up with Springfield to provide a competitive and fun experience for for players in grades 4-8. For the 2009 season, Summit girls softball became Summit Girls Fastpitch Softball, Or SGFS.  We continued to expand our program, for the first time including first grade.  We also switched our league associations, our older girls now play with Chatham and Madison, forming a league with over 800 girls involved in the 5th-8th grade.  We restructured our grades such that grades 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6, 7 and 8 play together.

For girls in grades 1 and 2  (Softball Transition League), the emphasis is on fun and familiarization with the game.

For girls in grades 3 and 4,  (Softball Junior League), the level of competition increases a bit as pitching becomes part of the equation and games are played against other Summit teams.

For girls in grades 5 and 6 (Softball Major League), this is the first chance to play inter-town competition.  Games are umpired by professional ASA umpires.  With some exceptions to allow for player development (i.e. no stealing 2nd base, no dropped 3rd strike, 5 run inning limit) this league plays full softball rules.  Much more competitive than the Junior League

For girls in grades 7 and 8 (Softball Senior League), the object is to take the play to the next level.  There is more a focus on the complete game of Softball (stealing, bunting, hit and run, double play, dropped 3rd strike, etc).  Again, all girls inthe 7th and 8th grade are welcome to sign up and play.  Girls playing on the Summit Middle School (SMS) Girls Softball Team are offered the option of playing with the SGFS 6- 8th grade teams.  Coaches work with the Summit Middle School staff to avoid scheduling conflicts.  One immediate benefit of this approach is that with the SGFS season ending the 3rd week of June and the SMS season ending in mid-May, those girls on both teams will get an additional 4 weeks of games before their summer vacation starts.

In addition to the above spring season leagues, SGFS offers the chance to join one of our Summer and Fall travel teams in the 10, 12, 14U and High school age levels.  We also offer several fall and winter clinics through our partnership with Frozen Ropes of Union and their professional softball staff.  The clinics are designed to teach both basic skills and more advanced techniques to strengthen girls softball prowess and keep them involved in the sport year-round.
