PYH Mite Development Program Details

The 2011-12 Perinton Youth Hockey Mite Development Program will focus on player development while offering a variety of routes for your child to learn the game of hockey. The basis for the program will be the USA Hockey “FUNdementals” outline for player development which provides options and educates families to either a House Development or a Travel Program. At the Mite Development age it is important to teach the basics of hockey and instill the love for the game and PYH wants to provide an enhanced playing experience to let the player and family decide what is best for their needs.

To start the season PYH is holding a Mite Development Camp March 14-16, 2011 run by the Rochester Hockey Academy which will provide skill development and help gauge the players current skill level. In the Fall the players will be grouped based on current skill level and broken into groups for practice sessions. Each group will practice in 50-minute sessions and the number of sessions will vary depending on the team level.
  • House Teams: play a maximum of 20 games and 40 practices
  • Travel Teams: play a maximum of 30 games and 60 practices.

The outline for player development uses USA Hockey's American Development Model (ADM) which clearly outlines the program parameters and serves as a guideline for number of practices and games during a year. PYH is focused on providing a variety of routes for players and instill a life-long passion for the game of hockey. It is our plan to offer joint practices for all Mites as well as dividing into groups that follow the traditional Mite Travel and Mite House A & B schedules by dividing players based on skill and preference.

The PYH Mite Development Team will be skating in the upcoming 2011-2012 hockey season at primarily the 2003 birth-year level. 2004 and 2005 birth-year levels are also encouraged to partake in the 3-day Mite Evaluation camp. The team will be selected from this evaluation camp and will be a member of the Western New York Amateur Hockey League ( which is the home of 27 Amateur Hockey Associations from Western NY. In 2010, this team participated in the WNYAHL Mite Major Travel Division. The decision on which level to participate in for the upcoming 2011-2012 season will be based on the collaboration efforts of the appointed Head Coach and the PYH evaluation team.

The Objective:
  • Provide a Mite Development Team at PYH with the goal of developing players by emphasizing skill development and schedule balance to ensure that players enjoy this level.
  • Create a Mite Development Team that will instill a long-term passion and love for the game of hockey without having to sacrifice other team sports or activities.
  • The team will be focused on having fun and developing players to compete successfully this hockey season and beyond by enhancing the player’s individual skill development and incorporating it with team play concepts.
  • Provide a controlled environment with supervision by the PYH Board to ensure coaches are following the plan and player progression programs throughout the season.
  • The program will follow the ADM Model (American Development Model)

The Plan:
Practices: The team will practice roughly 2 x per week with most practices being held at Thomas Creek Ice Arena (TCIA). The practice schedule will run from September thru mid-March.

Games: The team will play league games as an affiliate of the WNYAHL season with most home games being held at Thomas Creek Ice Arena. [Approx. 16/year + playoffs] Visit ( for more info on teams that belong to WNYAHL.

Tournaments: The team will participate in 2-4 tournaments, including at least one hosted by PYH at Thomas Creek Ice Arena. Tournaments will be spread out throughout the season to assure they do not interfere with the league schedule. [est. 16 games: depending on team agreed upon goals]

The Budget:
The budget will be developed for the entire year and reflect the plan above.  Once the schedule and budget are developed and distributed they are final with the only exceptions being unforeseen expenses or changes due to team agreed upon additions (tournaments, extra ice, etc.). The estimated per player costs are determined by dividing the total team cost by 16 players. The cost will go up if there is less than 16 players, or down if there are more.

PYH Development Team cost is determined by:

- Cost of total amount of ice used by the team for practices and games
- Cost of referees for games
- Fixed cost per team for PYH overhead: this covers league fees, insurance, administration, etc.

Player Selection/Camp:
Development Camp will be conducted by the head coach with assistance from the PYH advisory team. Final decisions on team selection will be made by the head coach. Development Camp will be held at Thomas Creek Ice Arena March 14th, 15th, and 16th. All Mite age children are encouraged to attend.
