Tryouts for 2022-2023 MetroWest Basketball
Wellesley Youth Basketball Association will be holding tryouts for players in grades 5-8 during various evenings from September 19th to September 30th. A detailed tryout schedule will be posted as soon as it's available. Mandatory registration for tryouts is open now and will run through September 16th. Tryout fee: $25
**Players must be registered prior to tryouts - we will NOT be able to accomodate walk-ins or late registrants this year**
What is the MetroWest Basketball experience? MetroWest (MW) is a program designed for those boys and girls in grades 5-8 who live in Wellesley and meet the age requirements, and who are serious about playing competitive travel basketball. Typically, a MW player will have 2 mandatory practices a week and one game each Sunday, with away games played in communities potentially as close as Natick or as far away as Attleboro, Bridgewater, etc. Regular MW games will be played Sundays December 4th to February 26th, including MLK weekend and both Sundays over February vacation, followed by playoffs March 1st - March 12th. Some coaches may opt to have their teams participate in pre-season tournaments, typically held Thanksgiving weekend. For additional information about the MW league, please refer to the MetroWest Basketball website.
**Also including 4th graders in our pilot program**
How are tryouts conducted? Tryouts are conducted by independent evaluators, and coordinated by age group coordinators to determine rosters for boys and girls teams at each grade level. Depending on interest and talent, girls typically have A & B teams at each grade level and boys have A, B & C teams. Every player will participate in at least one tryout. If a particular grade/gender has significant players trying out, some players may not be invited to participate in the second tryout. **4th graders will be placed on BALANCED teams**
Tryout Policy: Tryout dates are tryout dates. We select the teams at the end of the second tryout, so there is no opportunity for a "later tryout." If a player is injured or sick and can’t participate in some/all of tryouts, the evaluators will go on the information they were able to garner from the time that they saw, but a more limited sample will tend to work against the player. If an injured or sick player has played previously in any of our programs and as a result we have sufficient knowledge of his/her skills, he/she will be eligible for a team and we will take our prior knowledge into account when evaluating players and creating teams. This is at the discretion of the program. Our primary winter program is Wellesley Hoops which includes one practice and one game per week. The teams are balanced and everyone is included regardless of whether they can participate in the weekend evaluations we use to create the balanced teams. So even if MW does not work out this year, your child will be able to participate in an excellent, competitive program.
What happens after tryouts? 10-11 players will be selected for each team, and coaches will be identified once the teams have been determined. As soon as roster decisions have been communicated, players will be instructed how to pay 2022-2023 program fees on the WYBA website. Payment is due immediately upon receipt of invoice.
