2009 Senior Division Playoffs

Senior Division Championship Game
Saturday, June 13, 2009

  VS.
Wow!  The championship game did not disappoint.  The Athletics and the Rockies always seem to bring out the best in each other and Saturday night at Gile Field was no different.  Last year, the Athletics stunned the Rockies in the Senior Division Championship Game.  But this year, the Rockies were determined to not let that happen again.

The tone of the game was set early by the pitchers on each team.  Rockies pitcher Sydney F. (6 IP, 4R, 8Ks) and Athletics pitcher Jen B. (6 IP, 6R, 9Ks) were focused and spot-on right from the start.

The Rockies struck first with two runs in the bottom of the 1st.  It stayed that way until the 3rd inning when the Athletics cut the lead to one.  The Rockies came right back with two runs in the bottom of the 3rd to go up by a score of 4-1.

The Athletics rallied in the 4th inning scoring two runs to cut the lead to 4-3.  With the lead down to a single run, the Rockies put together a rally including a key 2-RBI base hit by Olivia F. that gave the Rockies a 6-3 lead heading into the 5th inning.

The game remained 6-3 until the top of the 6th.  Katie S. led off the inning for the Athletics.  With the count 0-2, she was right on top of a Sydney F. fastball and hit it up the middle for a base hit.  Juliann C. followed with another hit.  With runners on 2nd and 3rd, the heart of the A's order was up.  The cleanup hitter hit a shot to right field that looked promising until Rockies outfielder Molly F. tracked it down for the out (with A's runner Katie S. tagging up and scoring from third).  The next batter for the Athletics took a good cut and hit a fly ball to right that Molly F. caught to end the rally.

A's pitcher Jen B. keep her team close by retiring the Rockies in order in the 6th.

Rockies pitcher Sydney F. retired the Athletics in order to end the game.  With the 6-4 win over the Athletics, the Rockies finish the season undefeated (16-0) and win the 2009 Senior Division Championship
Congratulations to the Athletics and the Rockies for a great game and an outstanding season.

Semifinal #1

VS.
The undefeated and #1 seed Rockies beat the #4 seed Pirates 21-3 in a semi-final matchup at Gile Field.  The Rockies had strong pitching from Sydney F. and some clutch hitting (Molly F. - HR, triple).  The Pirates battled hard with solid pitching from Julia K. and gritty defense including some great outfield plays by Mary A.  With the win, the Rockies advance to the Senior Division Championship Game for the second straight year.

Semifinal #2
  VS.
In the other semifinal, the #2 seed Athletics beat the #3 seed Red Sox in a close ballgame at Kelly Field.  The Red Sox pitching kept the A's at bay and after three innings the Red Sox held a 4-3 lead.  Athletics Pitcher Jen B. pitched well and got out of several jams with the strikeout.  The Athletics broke it open in the 4th inning with some timely hittng and great baserunning by Heather M.  The Red Sox kept battling but the combination of good pitching and solid defense kept the Red Sox in check as the Athletics held on for the 16-5 win.  With the win, the Athletics advance to the Senior Division Championship Game for the second straight year.
