General Information

League play runs from November through February, for boys and girl’s teams from 2nd through 8th grade.  Teams will play between 10-12 regular season games (depending on the total number of teams in each grade level) followed by playoffs and a CHAMPIONSHIP weekend at TBD facility.

Eligibility:  Eligibility in the AYL is based on the grade level your child will be enrolled in for the fall of 2023. Participants are allowed to Play Up one (1) grade level without AYL Board approval.  Teams may be allowed one (1) Play Down participant, with prior AYL Board approval.

Practice Schedule:  Practices for the 2023-2024 season will begin the first week in November, depending on gym availability. Teams are generally able to practice one to two times per week.  The exact time and location of these practices are dependent on gym availability per approved permits by the CCSD and will be scheduled with the coaches as quickly as possible.  However, practice days and times are typically Monday-Friday between 6:30-9:00.

Game Schedule:  Regular season games are typically played on Saturday, with a possibility of Fridays and/or Sundays, depending on the total number of teams throughout the league and gym availability.  Playoff games will be played on Saturday over the course of one to two weekends.  The CHAMPIONSHIP weekend will be a full day of games played on Saturday at a TBD facility. (NOTE: ALL game and times are subject to gym availability and could be played at alternate locations and/or dates and times, including Sundays).

Levels of Play:

Division 1:  This level of competition is intended for kids who have been playing basketball consistently and understand fundamentals of ball handling and basic game rules.  Teams that have played together in other leagues for at least 1 year should consider playing at this level.  Returning Spartan teams that have a greater than 50% winning record AND 60% or more of their players returning are encouraged to play at this level.

Division 2: This level of competition is intended for kids who desire a competitive basketball experience but may not have been playing on a consistent team in previous years or are just moving up from a recreational league.

Note: Last season there were no separate divisions.  The basketball board will be discussing this and make a decision as to whether or not we will have two divisions or just one by the end of September 2023.

All teams will be reviewed by the Basketball Board to determine if further division of age groups is necessary, based on teams registered.  Divisions within age groups will be split into further groups, as necessary.  The Board will work together to create groups based on standings history and coach information to provide for better competitive matchups.  Based on number of teams registered, separate playoff and championship games may be provided for groups as appropriate.

It is the AYL Basketball Board's goal to manage a program that is fun and promotes sportsmanship and a lifelong love of the game of basketball.  Throughout the season we will post updates and other additional information, so please check back periodically.
