SCOTTSDALE UNITED LACROSSE CLUB 2022 ARIZONA YOUTH LACROSSE SEASON INFORMATION
Scottsdale United is the largest lacrosse club in the state of Arizona, with more than 150 players from 1st to 8th grade competing in the Youth Lacrosse of Arizona League (YLA) at www.azlax.org.
Scottsdale United was formed in 2014 by combining two previous clubs: Scottsdale Swag and Scottsdale Lacrosse Club.
We are a parent-led organization that believes in volunteer leadership to keep costs low, and paid coaches and assistant coaches to ensure quality and accountability on the field and off.
OUR BOUNDARIES
The YLA supports geographic boundaries for all of our clubs, and United is no exception. This only applies to our winter season.
United’s boundaries are roughly the same as the Scottsdale Unified School District itself, with a southern most border of Lincoln Dr. Anyone south of Lincoln is eligible for Phoenix Lacrosse Club.
United’s boundaries cover the traditional SUSD, north of Lincoln Dr. If you live or attend a school, public, charter or private, within our boundaries, you are eligible to play of United.
In the event that your circumstances prevent you from playing with United this year, we will ensure that you are introduced to the lacrosse club in your area.
TEAMS & AGE-SPECIFIC RULES AND GAME STRUCTURE
We expect to field teams in all four YLA age divisions for the 2022 season, with multiple teams in each division likely, based on interest from returning and new players. We have averaged 4 8U teams, 2 10U teams, 3 12U teams, and 2 14U teams each of the last 2 years.
In divisions where we enter COMPETITIVE and DEVELOPMENTAL teams (12U &14U) we will conduct player evaluations in the 1st two weeks of practice. No teams will be assigned until after initial player evaluations are conducted and a final structure is decided.
To be clear, these player evaluations are not tryouts. Everybody who registers is guaranteed to practice and play in the YLA. The goal is to introduce as many new players as possible to the sport of lacrosse, and ensure that they receive the skill development that is most appropriate for their experience level.
The YLA will also be adopting age-specific rules and field dimensions this season, based on the recommendations of U.S. Lacrosse. The age of your player can be determined on page 2 of the following link (https://www.uslacrosse.org/sites/default/files/public/documents/rules/age-group-chart-18-19.pdf). - All players are expected to be at the fields, in pads and ready to go when practice begins. Be sure to arrive 15 minutes before every practice to allow your child the time they need to prepare.
- If your child plays other sports that overlap the United season, please let us know in advance at
. It is important that your player be able to participate in practice at least once a week in order to participate in games on the weekends. Of course, communicating any conflicts with coaches is essential.
YLA GAME FORMAT
- The YLA conducts weekend festivals that bring all teams together to a different location around the Valley each weekend. All United teams will be in action at the same fields as much as possible.
- Each United team will compete in two games nearly every Saturday from January 26th through the end of March 30. United will have no practice or games during spring break.
- Game schedules will work youngest to oldest this year, with 8U teams playing first and middle school teams playing last. Games typically begin at 8am with the oldest age groups finishing at 5pm.
- Game monitors will be present on the sidelines of each game to ensure that a positive atmosphere and good sportsmanship are exhibited by all participants. These volunteers from each team will be clearly marked for easy identification.
Game monitors will be empowered to warn and eject spectators for the rest of the day in the event poor sportsmanship is repeatedly demonstrated by spectators despite verbal warnings.
- The season culminates in the Cactus Cup on April 2nd and 3rd, with each team playing multiple games. League champions will be recognized in the 10U, 12U and 14U divisions.
WEATHER POLICY
Field lacrosse is an outdoor sport, meaning that practice and games may be impacted by thunderstorms or strong rains.
Our priority as an organization is the safety of our players, coaches and spectators. In the event that lightning or steady rain is expected prior to or is seen/heard in the area of our practice fields, we will cancel practice and let all parents know via email, the website and social media channels as soon as possible.
While the sport of lacrosse is played in the rain, most municipalities will cancel games and practices if standing water is present or expected. When that happens, we will let you know as soon as possible via the same channels.
Scottsdale United has a NO REFUND policy for any practices or games that are cancelled due to rain. These events are entirely out of our control, coaching staffs are paid a flat fee for the season, as are team fees to the league.
In the event games are cancelled, those games cannot be made up at a future date due to schedules booked well in advance and a full calendar of games leading up to the Cactus Cup.
