All volunteer umpires new to PHBA start at LEVEL 1; umpiring Bases Only at the Pioneer and American age levels.
To qualify for LEVEL 1, all new umpires are required to complete 4-hours of training. It is comprised of 2 hours of classroom and 2 hours of on-field training. Our new training program is more than enough to get you ready for getting on the field.
Returning umpires currently at LEVELS 1, 2, or above (3, 4, 5) wanting to move up another level will be required to complete additional advanced training and vetting by the ULT in order to advance to the next level.
Even with our training, as a new umpire you are bound to have concerns before stepping onto to the diamond. We have taken steps to minimize those concerns. All first year umpires will be assigned a mentor or veteran umpire when working a game. This mentor or veteran/mentor will be an experienced umpire who will be the Umpire In Chief (UIC) for each game you work. The role of this veteran umpire will be to mentor the new umpire prior to, during, and after the game AND be the intermediary in ALL instances where managers/coaches may question a call made by the new umpire. After the UIC deals with the manager's question, the UIC will engage the new umpire (his partner) in a separate discussion of the call away from the manager.
Clothing and Gear
Besides training, we also need you to look the part. While PHBA provides a hat and shirt for all umpires, the pants, belt, shoes and socks fall to each umpire.
We urge every umpire to wear grey slacks, black belt, black shoes, and black socks when umpiring. NO jeans, shorts, sweat pants, white socks, or flip flops. This goes a long way in showing managers and coaches your commitment and professionalism toward the craft and the kids. We are fond of saying that "looking the part" is half the battle.
There are several inexpensive options for this clothing the ULT and I can provide should you choose to buy umpire pants and shoes. If you are ready to step up to plate work, PHBA has you covered there as well as the league will provide the appropriate plate gear!
Contact the Chief or any other ULT Member to gain access to the LEVEL 1 Bases training page that will guide you through the basic knowledge required.
