Get to Know Our Coach, Melissa Ames (
I was born and raised in Rochester, NY and started my hockey career at the age of 5. I spent my early years of hockey playing with the boy’s teams at Webster. I joined the Rochester Edge in 2008 where I spent the next four years developing as a hockey player on and off the ice. Our 16U team in 2011 won the Girls Tier 1 New York State Championship. My final year of youth hockey was spent playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite – where I had the opportunity to travel overseas and play against top teams in Finland and Russia for a two-week period.
I committed to play college hockey at Plattsburgh State my junior year of high school. These were four of my best years of hockey. I had the distinction of not only winning 4 ECAC West titles, but also winning 4 consecutive NCAA National Championships; I became 1 of 5 players who have ever done this in women’s college hockey!! Plattsburgh’s record over my college career from 2013-2017 was 111-5-4.
When not training or doing off-ice work, I spent my summers throughout my high school career as a private hockey instructor. I was able to gain knowledge from a variety of different trainers. I gave private lessons to hockey players focused on working on goals the players set for themselves. I also coached in a variety of summer hockey training camps.
After my college career, I wasn’t ready to be done playing the sport I love and was fortunate enough to continue my career playing professionally in Germany. I spent 2 years playing hockey in the top league: 1. Frauen Bundesliga in Hannover, Germany. In both seasons I led my Hannover Indians team in goals and ranked among the top 15 overall point scorers in the Bundesliga.
I have now returned back to Rochester after playing hockey overseas and having the opportunity to travel the world. I currently work for Neutral Zone Hockey where I scout and evaluate female hockey players ages 13-17. I am also working on completing my Master in Business Administration with a concentration in Data Analytics.
My goal is to be able to develop every player on and off the ice to become a better person. I will implement a very competitive, intense, and fun atmosphere within my team. I have played for very competitive programs that have taught me the fundamentals of hockey and challenged me to become a better person. I believe that every player has an important role on a team and will have the chance to make a difference. Skill development is just as important as learning systems. The ability to handle pucks and possessing a diverse skill set will allow players to become stronger in team systems. The team trumps everything in my philosophy of coaching. I will coach by my motto of being disciplined, selfless, and relentless.
I am very happy to be back with the Edge program and part of the continued growth of the girls game in the area. I am excited to help our players achieve their hockey goals. By sharing the knowledge I have gained over the years of playing for a variety of different coaches and in very competitive leagues, I aim to develop complete athletes and get our players to their next level.
