Get to Know Our Coach, Dave Waldo ( )

I grew up in Wisconsin and during my younger years I played travel hockey all around the states of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and Illinois. As a senior in High School I left home to play hockey for the Soo Hawks in Sault Saint Marie, Michigan. From there I went on to play two years of Junior A hockey in Indianapolis, Indiana for the Indy Junior Ice. Following my time in Indianapolis, I went on to play 1 year of collegiate hockey at Fredonia State University before hanging up my skates as a player.  Now like many of you, I am looking to give back to the game that taught me so much!

My day job is as a kindergarten teacher in the Rush-Henrietta Central School District.  My 20 years as a teacher in the Rush-Henrietta Central School District has provided me with great resources for coaching young athletes.   I have been the head coach for my son’s travel team through Rochester Youth Hockey/Roco for the past 7 years.  The 2019-20 season will be my last year coaching my son’s 2006 travel team. I will then be transitioning into coaching with the Rochester Edge.  I am truly looking forward to working with this team and seeing all of our players develop and improve as hockey players and as young ladies!

The foundation of my program for this coming season will be individual skill development with a heavy focus on skating skills and edge work, passing/receiving, puck control and puck protection, shooting, body contact and angling.  Our skills focus will enable us to build into this season's core team concepts which include aggressively pressuring the puck, gaining and maintaining possessing the puck, playing without the puck, playing a 200 foot game, and how to attack and defend in all three zones.

In addition, I will also promote the John Wooden Pyramid of Success as the foundation of our character-development program.  We will define success not by wins and losses, but by effort given, fully and consistently, as both an individual, a hockey player, and a member of the Rochester Edge. This focus reflects the significance of character as the common denominator of our success. Building character is a key initiative of my plan for the year.

Girls 12u Training Plan 2020-2021:

My philosophy for maximizing development is:
