We all know that hockey is a winter sport, and with that comes the eventuality that a practice or game will be cancelled due to the weather. This page contains information for parents, coaches, and team managers.
Weather conditions vary from town to town, and ultimately it is up to each individual to decide whether it is safe enough to travel at any time.
In general, we can expect the rink to be open unless a no travel advisory has been issued by the town, county, or state. As long as the rink is open, scheduled ice time is billable to the team even if the team chooses to cancel a practice or game. For this reason, rinks prefer to remain open and will usually wait until the last possible moment to announce a closure.
Please do not contact the rink to find out if your daughter's practice or game is cancelled.
If a rink closes, they will post it to their web site and notify ice schedulers. Our ice scheduler will then notify team coaches and managers, who will then notify team members and parents.
Communication must be made and confirmed received in person (phone call) between team coaches and/or managers. No voice mail, no email, no text.
In addition to the above, the process for game cancellation is covered by league or affiliate rules.
At a minimum, you can expect the following:
- Cancellation must be made a minimum amount of time before the scheduled game time
- Cancelling team usually covers the cost of ice and refs
- League must be notified within a certain timeframe
- Game must be rescheduled and league notified within a certain timeframe
See the league specific rules for details.
