ARLINGTON YOUTH LACROSSE HAS NOW PARTNERED WITH ARLINGTON FIELD HOCKEY. TOGETHER THEY ARE BRINGING FIELD HOCKEY TO ARLINGTON
The Fall 2019 Arlington Field Hockey season began in late August. Registration is now closed for 2019. We will be opening registration for next fall in June of 2020. AFH's Spring program is lacrosse. We strongly recommend giving it a try!
1/ When do I register my child?
Registration for next season, Fall 2020 will open in June of 2020. The first announcement of registration opening will be posted here on AYLC's website. At any time, you may reach out to our field hockey commissioner, Megan Sullivan at
2/ When are practices + games?
Practices began early August.
Practices will be held in Arlington through October. See your team page for your team's practice schedule.
Games will start the weekend of September 7th, no games on Columbus Day weekend. Games will be held in Arlington, Great Falls, and Herndon, VA. The game schedule will be determined after coordinating with competing teams in the area, the Northern Virginia Field Hockey Alliance. See our NOVA FH Alliance page.
3/ What if my child has never played Field Hockey before?
Many haven’t, so no worries. That's exactly why Arlington Field Hockey was created.
Field hockey is a sport that many don’t learn until they start High School. All three Arlington High Schools have a Varsity and JV field hockey team. Even learning this sport for the first time in 8th grade will give you an edge over many of the high schoolers coming out to play. Plus, it’s really fun! We know that many are new to this sport, and that’s the purpose of Arlington Field Hockey to introduce field hockey and help it grow.
4/ What does my child need to play field hockey?
Not much, just a field hockey stick, mouthguard and shinguards. You can find out how to choose the size of your stick in the below chart, and at the beginning of the season, our coaches will be able to help with this purchase.
5/ I used to play field hockey and would like to help coach?
Wow, do we want to hear from you! If you would like to help coach, please email Megan Sullivan at
Even if you did not play, we have practice plans and assistants who have played and can help parents and adults who would like to coach.
Our teams will be playing on modified fields and with modified rules. We follow USA field Hockey rules with certified USA field hockey referees umpiring our games, but when using modified fields the rules must be adjusted. You can see a review of our modified rules here.
