Western 22-23 Coaches

Peter Klingel:

Pete started playing competitive Hockey at the age of 7.

He played for his JR High and then Greenwich High school.

After high school he  played house league college hockey in Florida.  He currently plays adult hockey.

I have been coaching youth hockey for 7 years. I am certified to coach up to the Bantam level but choose to focus on the younger levels, Mites Squirts and PeeWee.

I am working for DIA coaching beginner hockey,  learn to skate and cross ice. I also coach for Western Jr Colonials coaching, Mites, Squirts and occasionally PeeWee. I attend USA Hockey coaching classes annually. This year my focus will be on total skill development and fostering the love of hockey for Western’s youngest players.

  • Head Coach 3 years Ridgefield High School (2020 - present) -

  • 1 year Western 16U Tier 2 (2021) - Co-Head Coach

  • I believe practices are significantly more important than games based on how many puck touches you get, total amount of time on the ice and the hands-on learning it provides. I hold my players accountable so they learn lessons that nothing is guaranteed unless you put in the work. I adjust practice plans to fit the ADM model as well as areas we need improvement on that are showing up in games.

  • Why I began coaching and still do, simply I have a love for the game of hockey. That love comes from the type of hockey community I grew up in, the friendships/families I’ve made along the way, and the coaches and teammates I had. I would like to be a part in creating the same experience for the younger generations of hockey players.

  •  Coaching style/philosophy: I like to build a good foundation on and off the ice. On the ice teaching and sharpening the basic skills of playing hockey and being a good teammate. Off the ice being a respectful, hardworking teammate/son/ daughter.

  • I refereed hockey for 10 years before I got into coaching. The reason I got

into coaching was to make more of an impact on the players development.

It is extremely rewarding to watch someone master a skill or concept and

apply them into game situations. I wouldn’t say that I have a specific

philosophy, I believe you have to adapt to each season. My motto is

Attitude, Effort, and Focus. Three things that each player needs to bring to

every practice and game for us to be successful. I don’t judge success as

how many wins or losses there are. Is the team better at the end of the

Year? That is my goal. I am dedicated and committed to the team and families.  Coaching is something that is very important to me. I don’t miss practices or games and always show up  very prepared for both. I expect the kids to work hard and have fun. Fun while playing hockey is also very important to me. Attendance is also something that is very important for us to be successful as a team.
