Travel Softball

Who we are: The Salem Blue Devils are a non-profit organization dedicated to improving our young athlete’s skill level and emphasizing good sportsmanship and teamwork.  As a non-profit organization, we are able to provide a low-cost option for girls of Salem, NH and surrounding communities to develop their softball skills through a more immersive and competitive experience.

*If demand and volunteers allow, we will try and offer 2 teams at the 10U and 12U levels.  The teams will be divided based on travel program association and skills.

White Team:  USA Program Affiliation – Higher level of competition, more tournaments available and athletes will be comprised of Salem NH residents and surrounding communities.  Participation in the recreational program is optional for these athletes.

Blue Team:  Babe Ruth/USA hybrid – Requires athletes to be from Salem NH and participation in the recreational program will be required.  Tournaments will be a combination of Babe Ruth and USA affiliated programs.

Tuition Costs:  Depends on the extent of private facility rental, number of tournaments and Fall league participation (see below).  Because we are a non-profit organization, and we aim to keep costs as low as possible, it can be hard to lock down the exact price before we have all our costs in hand.  To aid with keeping costs down, we typically have an fundraiser to help raise additional funds.

What’s Included:

  • Tournament Registrations
  • Preseason scrimmages (pending other teams’ availability)
  • Registration and Insurance fees
  • 12 Week winter workouts aimed at improving fundamentals, speed, agility, and strength. Sessions to begin in January

Additional Uniform Costs:  We have partnered with a new vendor where you can order what your athlete needs straight through their online store, but an opportunity to purchase fan gear.  Based on previous years, we are estimating a cost ranging between $200-$300 per athlete.

What’s Included:

  • (2) custom jerseys
  • (2) pants
  • (1) Belt
  • (2) pairs of socks
  • (1) practice jersey
  • warm-up jacket (optional)
  • Helmet (optional)
  • backpack type softball bag (optional)

Schedule

Fall: We will begin practicing outdoors as a team in September and will likely have a few scrimmages against other local teams if schedules allow.  If available, a fall ball league may be added to the schedule.

Holidays: We will take a break during the holiday season (November – December).  Practices conducted in this period will be optional and likely focused on specialized training, such as catching, hitting, pitching, etc.

Winter: Beginning in January, twice-weekly practices/conditioning indoors in both private rented facilities and public gyms.  If a scrimmage or two can be coordinated with private teams that have indoor facilities, we will look to explore that option.

Spring/Summer: When the weather breaks and fields are opened, we will begin practicing outdoors two to three times a week.  The tournament season will start in May and run through July.  A list of tournaments and dates will be provided as early as possible usually in January so families can arrange their summer schedules accordingly.  These tournaments will typically be within driving distance (1 hr) from Salem.  A destination tournament (still within driving distance) could be a possibility if a majority vote is received by the families.

Tournament Play Example:  Teams will play two to three games in pool play for seeding in Sunday’s single-elimination round. Champions and runners-up will receive trophies.  Coaches will do their best to ensure playing time for the first three games.  Sunday’s single-elimination format may not allow that flexibility and all players may not play.

*It is understood that players have interests and play other sports outside of Softball and that is encouraged as it helps to build more well-rounded athletes.  We know that each player is not going to be available for every off-season practice or workout.  However, once the Spring and Summer season rolls around it is expected that Softball becomes the priority and every effort is made to attend each practice and tournament.

Example Fall Schedule

  • 1 x per week conditioning (1 hour)
  • 1 x per week outdoor practice (1.5/2 hours)
  • Scrimmages whenever possible

Example Winter Schedule (Beginning in January)

  • 1 x per week indoor hitting/fielding practice (2 hours)
  • 1 x per week all teams conditioning (1/1.5 hours)
  • 1 x per week all teams pitchers/catchers (TBD)

Example Spring/Summer Schedule

  • 2-3 x per week outdoor fielding practice (2 hours)
  • Weekend Tournament Play (End of May through End of July)
