2016 BVL COACHES FAQs:  How to email your team and more...

HOW TO EMAIL:  ALL HEAD COACHES SHOULD EMAIL THEIR TEAM AT THE EARLIEST CONVENIENCE

  • Introduce yourself, discuss your coaching philosophy & background, remind parents of early season activities, etc.
  • Head & assistant coaches have been linked to your team on the BVL site
  • Go to www.boulderlacrosse.org and click on the Team Pages tab
  • Navigate to your Team Roster page, then click on “Options” and then “Sign In”
  • Sign in to your BVL account to “unlock” the Roster page
  • Instructions to sign in: https://leagueathletics.com/Help/coach-guide/index.shtml
  • Post a news bulletin and email it to your team: https://leagueathletics.com/Help/coach-guide/add_news.shtml
  • I prefer creating a news bulletin and “broadcasting” to my team rather than just emailing, because this leaves a copy of the message on your Team Page for parents to view any time.
  • Be sure to un-check “Include Board, Officials, and Friends Teams” when broadcasting

PRACTICES:  DO NOT EVER SET FOOT ON A FIELD BEFORE YOUR SCHEDULED TIME !

  • Practices begin at 600pm at Manhattan, Casey, and Dawson
  • Practices begin at 530pm at New Vista
  • Coaches taking the field early last spring jeopardized our entire program, as we were faced with the potential loss of Manhattan this off-season.
  • If you take the field before 600pm at Manhattan, be prepared to explain to other coaches that you were responsible for having our permit there yanked

UNIFORMS

  • Will be distributed to teams at an upcoming practice before the first game
  • All players will receive new uniform (jersey and shorts).
  • Shooter shirts for Select players only
  • Players who registered late will likely receive uniform later than others
  • Parents will be emailed about an opportunity to swap out incorrectly sized jerseys & shorts

PROVIDED TEAM EQUIPMENT:

  • BVL will provide coaches with necessary equipment including 30 lacrosse balls, cones, first aid kits, 2 ice packs, whistles, goalie gear
  • New coaches will receive team backpack
  • Teams without designated goalies will receive one goalie stick, throat protector, and chest guard
  • Due to vendor issue, we may have limited numbers of goalie sticks available for distribution at this time.  We will distribute more as soon as possible.

TEAM MANAGER:  GET ONE !

  • Every team must have a team manager.  When you email your team, request a volunteer for the position.
  • Team manager will send out emails for you if you are not a great communicator.
  • Good communication is the key to a successful season— parents expect and appreciate this.
  • Team manager can also communicate about game times and locations, practices, snack schedules, picture days, etc.
  • Once a team manager is determined, email me with his/her name so that I can add them to the team roster—then they have access to email the team.

PLAYING TIME:

  • Should be significant for all players on all teams, regardless of division or competitive level.
  • Every player plays in every game.  There is no excuse for a player ever to go home in tears because he did not get in the game.
  • Playing time does not have to be equal for all players.  Other factors may impact playing time, including absence at practices, refusal to play alternate positions, etc.
  • Play everyone on your roster early and often in each game.  If the game is close in the 4th quarter, then and only then can you tighten your bench and play your best players.
  • Don’t make the mistake of overplaying your best players early in the game—then they will be gassed when you need them late in the game.
  • Communicate your playing time policy to parents before the first game.

SAFETY POLICY:

  • In the event of visible cloud-to-ground lightning, lightning detected within 6 miles, or audible thunder, all participants must take cover in a vehicle or building.  All outdoor activities must cease for 30 minutes from the last sound of thunder or last sighting of lightning.
  • All BVL coaches must abide by established concussion protocol and State of Colorado law:
    • Any player suspected of having a concussion must be removed from play immediately
    • Any player suspected of having a concussion must receive written clearance from a health-care provider before a coach may permit him to practice or play again
    • Verbal permission from a parent is not sufficient clearance for a concussed player to return to play
    • All coaches must have viewed an online concussion awareness course:  www.cdc.gov/concussion
  • When in doubt regarding the care of an injured player, call 911.   All players have supplemental insurance through US Lacrosse.
