14U Raritan  Division matchup:

Hillsborugh Jr Raiders Gold (34) at Ridge Jr Devils Gold (12)

While the cold began to set in on Lee Field in Basking Ridge, NJ, the teams from Hillsborough and Ridge were heating it up on the gridiron.  Though the score ended 34-12 in favor of Hillsborough, it was a hard fought, smash mouth game of football.

Hillsborough got the scoring off to a quick start with a 17-yard sweep by #80 Charlie Volpe, then a 39-yard touchdown run up the middle by QB #7 Mike Miller, led by great blocks from running backs #32 Mike Caporaso and #28 Nick West. Miller threw to West for the successful PAT Pass. Miller finished the game with 53 yards rushing and 54 yards in the air along with 2 touchdowns passes.  Ridge answered quickly with a score of their own marching methodically down field led by #16 QB Jack Berisha with runs from #21 Ryan Olivo and #44 Troy Bowles who ran through and dragged Hillsborough defenders before going down.  Capping it off with a physical 10 yard Touchdown run by #33 Nick Losada up the middle with blocking from #65 Aaron Duran, #55 Nick D’Amato and #70 Zachary Young, and a missed PAT, the score remained  7-6.   The interior line of Hillsborough led by #77 Mike Guiliano, #76 Brendan Lobelo#70 Carson DeRoner and #99 Vinny Castelano, and linebackers #33 Dominc Monsorno and #55 Jonathan Lobelo, were all a strong presence in the Ridge backfield.

Hillsborough opened the second quarter with a 68-yard shifty TD run up the middle by Caporaso, making Barry Sanders type moves to avoid the swarming Ridge defensive tacklers. Caporaso capped the day with 106 yards rushing for Hillsborough.  The PAT run by  Miller was successful making the score 14-6. Offensive Linemen #50 Ryan Leary#77 Mike Guiliano, #76 Brendan Lobelo#95 Brian Nastawa#60 Pierce Skala, and #81 Shane Donoghue made great blocks up, paving the way for Hillsborough.

Hillsborough then took advantage of some key turnovers from Ridge in the second quarter. A fumble recovery in the air by defensive tackle #77 Mike Guiliano, who carried half of Ridge's team on his back for 14 long grueling yards, led to a 26-yard touchdown sprint by #33 Dominic Monsorno. Hillsborough got the ball back on the first play of Ridge's next possession with another fumble grab in the air by defensive end West. On the very next play Miller threw a 21-yard strike to #13 Ryan Tasetano for Hillsborough's 4th score, and #14 Dillon Case got the successful PAT reception from Miller. A defense stop by Hillsborough, and a Ridge fumble recovery by #85 Patrick McCaffrey on the next two possessions, led to time expiring in the half with the score 27-6.

Ridge answered the bell in the 2nd half and marched down the field with a strong run by Bowles aided by punishing physical line play by #48 Nick Peterpaul, #70 Charlie Sichenzio#80 Liam Clark, and #88 Mike Vaccaro.  On 4th and goal from the 5 ard line, Ridge scored on a nice sweep toss around the right side of the line cutting the lead to 27-12.  It was a physical, defensive struggle for most of the 2nd half with both teams slugging it out in the trenches led by the Ridge Red Devil defensive lineman #63 John Mooney and #99 Greg Henson along with LB’s #52 Dylan Sweeney, #14 CJ Galusha, #50 Jason Ward and CB #26 Adam Meiner who led the way for Ridge’s defensive backfield along with #23 TJ Reynolds#46 Robert Travaglini, #24 Chris Molinari and #32 Stefan Dulyn.  Hillsborough added a second score by Tasetano with a 15 yd touchdown reception on a fly pattern to end the scoring early in the 4th quarter. A successful PAT Run by Miller left the score at 34-12 where it ended when time expired.

Hillsborough racked up 182 total yards rushing and 54 total yards passing, while Ridge pounded 106 total yards rushing and threw for another 63 total yards. Ridge dominated the clock with 40 offensive plays to Hillsborough's 24, but it was the three take-aways by Hillsborough that made the difference in this gridiron battle.

The atmosphere at Lee field was electric with these two heavyweights competing on the Field.  The two storied programs have a long history of memorable games.  While Hillsborough got the best of Ridge this week, The rematch on October 27th at Hillsborough, is a can’t miss game.  These two teams know each other well and it will be a barn burner for sure!  Come one come all as this will be a dynamic exciting game to watch!  Hillsborough – Ridge Part II October 27th!  Stay tuned.
