14U Delaware Division matchup:

Ridge Jr Devils Red (20) at Voorhees Jr Vikes Red (30)

Voorhees Strong Start Too Much for High Powered Ridge Varsity Red

You could feel the chill of fall starting to creep into Voorhees High School stadium as the Jr Vikings 14U Red team hosted the Ridge 14U Red team on Saturday night for their home opener.   These two undefeated team put on an offensive show, but In the end, it was the power of the Voorhees offensive line that proved to be the deciding factor in the 30-20 victory for the Jr Vikes.

Voorhees got a quick jump start when Ridge fumbled the ball on their opening series setting up Voorhees at the Ridge 7.  The Jr Vikings offense wasted little time punching it in on a well-executed right-side sweep by #32 Mickey Tramutola for the first score of the game.  Tramutola followed that by connecting on the the extra point kick and Voorhees had an early 8-0 lead.

On the subsequent series, Ridge had some success, but after gaining one first down they were stymied and forced to punt.   Voorhees took over on their own 35 yard line and marched 65 yards in 8 plays with big chunk runs culminating in a 15 yard TD run over the left side by #35 Issac Levitan who was the workhorse of the day with 10 carries for 48 yards.  Tramultola drilled his second PAT of the quarter and Voorhees was up 16-0.

The Jr Devil’s #33 AJ Lembo took the ensuing kickoff back 31 yards to set Ridge up at midfield on a well blocked return and with some nifty moves by Lembo.  The Ridge offense got back on track and showed why they came in undefeated as they moved the ball effectively and scored after five plays on a 37 yard pass from #24 Andrew Serucco to #87 Rooke Donohoe.    A successful snap, hold and kick by #68 Audrish Chattaraj converted the PAT to make the score Voorhees 16 Ridge 8.

A high, spinning kick-off was bobbled by Voorhees and #65 Tate Harrison came up with the ball at the Vorhees 43.  Ridge once again started to drive the ball down to the Vorhees 25 however, however a stout defense led by Jr Vikes #62 Kyle Jamison, who had 8 tackles on the day, stood strong on 4th down and the Ridge Jr Devils turned the ball over on downs.

On the very next play, Voorhees’s Tramulola stormed through the left side of the Ridge defense for a 75 yards run and his second touchdown of the day.  He then added his 3rd straight successful PAT kick to make the score Vorhees 24 – Ridge  8 at the half.   Note: Tramula ended the day with 2 TD, 158 yds on 6 carries and 3 PAT kick.    .

Voorhees took the second half kick-off back to the Ridge 45 and went to work using their size advantage on the line grinding out yardage.  They drove the field on nine plays ending with #21 Brandon Kurzeja scoring on a four-yard run up the middle.  Overall in the game, Voorhees churned out 238 yards of offense, mostly on the ground dominating time of possession.   The PAT Kick attempt was no good this time leaving the score Vorhees 30 – Ridge 6.    But a resilient and never-say-quit Ridge team fired back.   They took to the air, moving the ball 61 yards on 5 plays with #25 Will Deady scoring on a three-yard run.  The kick was not good, but Ridge moved closer making the score 30 – 14.  Voorhees fumbled on the second play of their next possession with #15 Charlie Paul finding the ball at the bottom of the pile at the Vorhees 39.

The start of the fourth quarter saw Ridge take the ball downfield from there and score on a 7 yard pass from #15 Charlie Paul to #82 Brady Wilson.  The kick was off the mark and the score moved to Voorhees 30 – Ridge 20.     Ridge had the momentum and was looking for another stop and score.   They were led by #76 Chris Oliver and #35 Sean Henry who each had multiple tackles fighting off blockers who had overwhelming size advantage.    Despite the valiant Ridge effort, Voorhees had other ideas.  The Jr Vikes were able to run out the clock on the final drive of the game, preserving the victory by keeping the ball away from a Ridge offense that was starting to fire on all cylinders.

It was obvious to all in attendance why these two teams came in undefeated and much of the chatter in the stands centered around how everyone expected to see these two teams in a rematch the post-season.
