Age & Level Guidelines

Sellwood Baseball and Softball accepts girls and boys, age 4 through 8th grade, for recreational and competitive teams. A child who is 4 years old may play if they will turn 5 before Sept. 1, 2020. Some exceptions are made to this guideline on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us if you wish to inquire.

Children in Pre-K and Kindergarten will automatically be placed on a Tee Ball team. Children in 1st and 2nd grade will automatically be placed on a Farm Ball team. Exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis, but they will be rare and with the safety of all players as our first consideration.

2nd graders may assess for the Sellwood National League. A small number of 2nd graders may be drafted for Sellwood National teams if they show extraordinary skills and knowledge of the game and as space allows.

T-Ball: Pre-School and Kindergarten. For players new to baseball and softball. Players use a tee to hit the ball for at least half the season, and then coaches pitch gradually as players develop. Focus at this level is on learning and fun! Practices start in late March and usually last for about an hour on two weeknights/week (typically somewhere in the 5-7p timeslot). Games are played two weeknights/week (usually M/W or T/Th, and typically somewhere in the 5-7p timeslot) and end in late June.

Farm: 1st and 2nd grade. Coaches pitch to their players at this level, and players who need a tee after four pitches can use it. Farm players usually know the basic game rules. There are three outs, a five-run offensive rule…and the focus is on learning and fun! Practices start in late March and usually last for about an hour on two weeknights/week (typically somewhere in the 5- 7p timeslot). Games are played two weeknights/week (usually M/W or T/Th, and typically somewhere in the 5-7p timeslot) and end in late June.

Sellwood National League: 3rd and 4th grade. It is a “local” league that does not travel as the Minor (County) teams do. Most kids in this age group play at this level. All players participating in this level are placed on teams based on assessments. As with Minor level, this is the first level of kid-pitch hardball along with base stealing and umpired games. Practices start in late March and usually last for about an hour+ on two weeknights/week (typically somewhere in the 5-7p timeslot). Games are played two weeknights/week (usually M/W or T/Th, and typically somewhere in the 5-8p timeslot) and end in late June. Assessments are REQUIRED at this level.

Softball: Fast-pitch softball for girls 1st – 8th grade. A variety of teams may be formed based on age level and depending on interest and registration. 8U utilizes a pitching machine, 10U and up are kid-pitch games. Depending on the team, there may be an opportunity to compete in weekend tournaments. Practices generally start the week after Spring Break, however some of the older teams may begin practice earlier depending on schedules and field availability.  Practice starts in April and will be held twice a week, before games start in early May (2 per week, Mon-Thur).  For T-Ball and 8U, once games begin, practices will be limited. 10U, 12U and 14U will generally have one practice per week during the season.

JBO: Sellwood Baseball is affilliated with and adheres to the rules of the Junior Baseball Organization.  The teams within JBO are separated into Counties (leagues) with Sellwood Baseball belonging to the Clackamas County Junior Baseball Association (CCJBA).  We represent Cleveland in the CCJBA and play teams from area programs such as Clackamas, Oregon City, Canby, Tualitan, West Linn, Milwaukie and Wilsonville, among others. JBO breaks each level (age group) into three divisions: National, American and Federal.  The National division provides competitive youth baseball, American provides an increased level of competition, and the Federal division provides advanced competition.  Each division at every level hold County Tournaments for qualifying teams with top teams from the County Tournaments earning their way to the JBO State Tournament.

County Minor: (3rd and 4th graders) This is a CCJBA travel league. About 10% of players in this age group will play at this level with the remainder playing in the Sellwood National League.
