Boys Basketball this winter!
by posted 09/07/2021

Travel Basketball Information

The objective of the travel program is designed for those boys who have the desire and willingness to practice, learn, and compete at a higher level against boys of similar ages from other towns in New Jersey while fostering an environment of instruction and teamwork and promoting safety and sportsmanship similar to that of the in-town recreation program. While the travel program is more competitive than the in-town recreation program, the travel program is intended to become more competitive as the boys progress from 4th grade through 8th grade. Being said, a higher level of commitment and cooperation is required from both the boys and their parents.

While this program is best suited for those interested in a higher level of competition and not every try out participant is guaranteed to make a team; the more boys that tryout, the more teams we can make at various skill levels.

Commitment

The travel program consists of league play and at least one tournament. Typical commitment will include at least 1-2 practices and 1-2 games per week, with some games being played on the weekends. The season will begin in late November/early December and will end in the middle of March.

Tryouts

Tryouts will be utilized to determine all grade level teams based on the number of boys who register. Tryouts will most likely be held the last two weeks of September (beginning Sept 20th). We are trying to secure gym space with the Berkeley Heights Board of Education, so more to come with the exact tryout dates. Tryouts will be held two nights per grade. The format of the tryouts is still being developed but will be some combination of individual and group skills as well as game action through the boys scrimmaging. Tryouts will be conducted by independent evaluators. Coaches and parents will not be able to observe the tryouts. Independent evaluators may elect to reach out to the Berkeley Heights Boys Commissioner or coaches to seek input, if necessary.

Eligibility

The BH PAL Travel Basketball program will be open to all Berkeley Heights boys in the 4th through 8th grades (2021-2022 school year). The fee for the program is $225.00. There will be a separate cost for uniforms. You must register through the PAL and submit payment to participate in the tryout. Registration will remain open through mid September, with additional reminders forthcoming.  Registration will not be available in person at the day of your son’s tryout.

Volunteers

Parent volunteers will serve as the coaches. Decisions on coaches will not be made until after the conclusion of the tryout process. If you are interested in coaching or volunteering, please be sure to indicate that while registering your son online.

Please take note: All boy's grades participating on a travel team are required to play in the In-town recreation league and attend 75 percent of the games or you cannot take a spot on a travel team. There will be no exceptions to this rule.

At times, it may be necessary to redistribute girls to ensure the teams and games are as competitive as possible.
