Scott Sugden



Scott Sugden was born in Redwood City, CA and raised in Sunnyvale.  He attended Wilcox High School, where he played 4 years of Varsity Baseball.  After Wilcox, Scott played baseball at Mission Community College.  He transferred to CSU, Hayward, and acquired his Bachelor’s of Science degree in Mathematics in 1997.  While at Hayward, Scott began his coaching career with a 15/16 year-old Pony-Colt team in Santa Clara.  He did this for two years, winning league and coaching the All-Star team.  After that, he transitioned to coaching High School baseball at his alma mater, Wilcox and then to Gunn High School.  Shortly after graduation, Scott began teaching Math and coaching Football at St. Lawrence High School in Santa Clara.  The following year, he began teaching Math at Washington High School in Fremont.  Scott transferred to Mission San Jose High School (Fremont) in 2002, where he continues to teach Math and currently serves as Math Department Chair.  Throughout Scott’s 17 years of service working for Fremont Unified at Washington and Mission, he has spent 14 of them as an on-campus coach for either golf or baseball.

Once Scott became a Dad, his focus for coaching became his boys.  He coached 5 teams for Ballistic United Soccer Club in Pleasanton and has coached for Mission San Jose Little League and Pleasanton American Little League.  This has accounted for 16 regular season teams and 6 all-star teams between his two sons, where Scott has coached or managed for every one.  In addition, Scott has coached with Tri-Valley Dawgs, Mission City, The Crushers, and BG Travel Ball Clubs.  Last year, he coached for the Tri-Valley Babe Ruth A’s and is proud to serve as the A’s Manager this season.

Tony Battilega, manager of the TVBR Royals, is in his 27th year of coaching baseball.

Tony played high school baseball in Littleton, Colorado at Bear Creek High School from 1983-1985 as a pitcher and center fielder.  He then attended the University of San Diego where he pitched from 1985-1989.  For two collegiate summers he pitched in the Jayhawk League for Clarinda, Iowa.  Following college graduation he traveled to Stockholm, Sweden where he played, coached, and worked as an international baseball ambassador for two years.

In 1991, Tony was the pitching coach for San Diego City College.  He then earned his teaching credential and began coaching high school baseball at Mt. Carmel High School in San Diego.  In 1992, he was hired at national HS powerhouse, Rancho Bernardo High School, where he worked as an assistant coach from 1992-98.  In 1998 Tony was hired as the varsity baseball coach for Granada High School in Livermore.  For 10 years, Tony fielded a competitive team in the East Bay Athletic League.  Granada hi-lights included an NCS championship runner up in 2001 and semi-final loss in 2002.

In 2008, Tony changed schools and began teaching / coaching at Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton.   While working as the hitting coach, Amador won NCS championships in 2010 and 2013. Tony’s current role at Amador Valley is pitching coach. 

Since 2006 Tony has also been actively coaching youth baseball in the Bay Area.  He has coached Pony, Little League and Travel ball.  Some of his youth coaching highlights have included 3 consecutive PFLL majors championships, 4 year PFLL all-star coach, and Cooperstown All-Star Village Championship runner up.

In 2015 Tony began coaching the Tri Valley Babe Ruth Royals.  In his first year, the Royals won the TVBR league championship.  Following the TVBR regular season Tony managed the 13-year old TVBR all-star team which won the Northern California State tournament, the Pacific Southwest Regional tournament and the 13 year old Babe Ruth World Series in Jamestown New York.   

Tony has a passion for developing youth athletes and has coached numerous players that have gone on to play college and professional baseball. 

Tony and his wife Jill, live in Pleasanton with their two children, Mia (16), and Joey (14).  Off the field, Tony loves the mountains and the beach with his family. He enjoys fishing, skiing, hiking, photography, and reading.

Mike Powers, Manager of the Tri-Valley Giants, is an avid sports fan, dedicated coach and father.   Mike played Division I Baseball and Football for San Jose State from 1987 – 1990.   Mike worked in the Sports Medicine field in the Bay Area for over 15 years.  In 2013, Mike was a Coach for the TVBR Giants under Manager Randy Moore and helped them win the 2013 title with a 16-4 record.  In addition, Mike has coached and managed baseball for San Ramon Little League for the last 6 years.  He has won 5 league championships at both the AAA and Majors level and  was the Manager of the 10 year old District all-star team in 2013.  Mike has also coached San Ramon Bears Youth Football for the past 4 years and is the current Head Football Coach for the San Ramon Bears Midget football team.  As the Manager of the Giants, Mike is focused on bringing strong, athletic and dedicated players into the TVBR program.  His goal is to develop his players and get them ready to play at the next level, High School baseball. Mike believes in respecting the great game of baseball, playing it the right way and playing it hard. When not coaching, Mike likes to spend time with his family, travel and be outside. Mike lives in Danville with his wife Laura and his three sons, Jack, Shane and Cooper.
