2020 Back to the Diamond
Dear WYB Families,

We hope you are all well and healthy. Our board of directors has been hard at work coming up with a plan to get our kids on the baseball field this year. I'm obviously jaded, but the annual little league experience is a valuable part of growing up. We have a plan to restart baseball. That plan and playing guidelines have been emailed to you and I encourage you to read them for more details.

After reviewing and discussing both the guidelines put forth by the state reopening task force and Little League International, we have canceled the 2020 teeball and middle school travel baseball programs. Refunds will be automatically processed in the next few weeks. We did not believe it was reasonable to ask 4-5 year olds to adhere to social distancing and other rules at the field and there are too many variables at this time to pull off a middle school travel program with all schools closed.

For our Babe Ruth, Major, Minor and Rookie players, we are hoping to start practices on June 8th for those wishing to play. We will operate a Mon-Thurs schedule and plan to start games on June 30 when phase 3 of the reopening plan begins. Coaches may schedule optional practices on weekends. The “season” will end on or before August 13th.

Prior to the stay-at-home order, the league was ramped up and scheduling practices and had already paid out $36,000 in annual expenses. We stocked our fields with materials like speedy-dry, field liner and paint, scorebooks, catcher's gear, and all the items we purchase annually. We paid for uniforms, insurance bills, chartering and website fees. We understandably lost sponsorship revenue because of the financial crisis covid19 caused. Since we are a 501c3 non-profit, we operate at the break-even point, but can still offer a 50% refund to those who cannot play baseball in the summer.

Families will be required to “re-register” for 2020 little league by June 4 (teeball can skip this). Please go to www.walthamyouthbaseball.com, then click the ‘register online’ link in the left-hand menu, and look for 2020 Back to the Diamond. Go through the registration steps and indicate one of three options (play, refund or donate). Refund requests will be processed as soon as possible, and if you are playing, you’ll hear from a coach closer to June 7. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding and hope you stay healthy and return to us in 2021.

Take care, WYB Board of Directors
