Affordable season long fun!
The Core Team is a Freestyle and All-Mountain youth development and competition ski and snowboard program operated by the Whaleback Mountain Club, separately from UVSSF. Whaleback Mountain Club is a registered non-profit organization that is comprised of local families who embody the spirit and values of the Core Team and love for snow sports. We operate with the support of Whaleback Mountain to offer affordable, season long programs. Our goal is to develop athletes in a fun and nurturing environment and inspire enthusiasm for winter sports. We ski and ride as teams encouraging each individual to progress to the best of their ability, whether as a recreational skier/snowboarder or as a competitor.

Core Team Hoodies Now Available to Order!
Hoodie Order Form
Hey Core Team!
Check out our new hoodie sweatshirt! If you'd like to place an order, please fill out the form and deliver it with payment to Keith Bergeron this Saturday, January 22nd. (We need at least 12 to place an order)
This weekend, in addition to our programs, we are hosting WhaleJam at Whaleback. This is a USSA sanctioned freestyle competition for our USSA registered freestyle skiers drawing over 100 athletes from all over New England. Most of our usual volunteers and coaching staff will be running the event, the lodge will be busy and the parking lot will be very full. Feel free to ask anyone wearing a black Core Team jacket where to go if you have any questions.
Regularly Scheduled Saturday Training: DELAYED DUE TO EXTREME COLD! All teams will train from 11am-2pm.
-MiniCore, MiniCore Plus and Devo groups: 11am to 2pm. Athletes will get ready and meet groups downstairs in the lodge. Younger athletes may need help finding their group and please be sure to check out your athlete on the deck at 2pm when programs end. MiniCore/MiniCore Plus will be skiing with Coach Joan Mitchell and Tanner Ames, Devo will be skiing with Coach Jon Ames.
-Core Snowboard, Core All Mountain, Core Freestyle and Devo Comp (non participants) will train as usual out of the Core Shack from 11am to 2pm.
**Please be sure your athlete comes prepared for the coldest weather; mittens (not gloves) are a must, dress in layers with technical fabrics, hand warmers, toe warmers, outside facemasks, inside face masks, lunch, tissues and hand sanitizer. Boots should be warm to start so bring bags inside tonight if you store them in the garage or car. Groups will take frequent breaks and athletes should be reminded about nose wiping etiquette (into a tissue - not their mitten or sleeve!) and frequent hand washing and/or sanitizing. The coldest weather naturally makes noses run. Face masks are required inside the lodge at all times unless seated eating or drinking.
This is a great opportunity for athletes and families to see what the competition side of our program is all about. This is a higher level of competition and super fun to watch! Do not worry, our Master of the Mountain fun event is right around the corner (1/29), where ALL of our teams and athletes are encouraged to participate!
SATURDAY 1/15 - Moguls
SUNDAY 1/16 - Slopestyle and Big Air/Aerials
Volunteers: upon arrival please check in with Ericka Bergeron, our volunteer coordinator upstairs in the lodge, near registration before heading out to your assignment. We still have several important volunteer spots available: www.whalebackcoreteam.com and clicking "Volunteering" from the top menu. or by clicking here.
The athletes are excited, the moguls are being skied, and we are thankful for such a great community of skiers and riders to help make this event a huge success! It will be a Whale of a weekend!
See you tomorrow,
Whaleback Mountain Club Board of Directors
As a follow up to Jon’s email earlier this week, I am working to coordinate the volunteer positions for the team. A vital part of keeping our program successful is through the support of our volunteers. Each core team participant’s family is expected to give back to the program. For our Mini-Core and Mini-Core Plus members we ask that you volunteer one time. For our Core Devo, Comp, All Mountain, Freestyle and Snowboard programs we ask that you volunteer twice. We also welcome anyone who is willing to participate more than we ask J
Throughout our season we have 5 days which volunteering is crucial to the success of the program. Those days are the three big events we host (Whale Jam (1/15, 1/16), Master of the Mountain (1/29), and Tri-States (3/5, 3/6).
The first big event is THIS WEEKEND J This event is a USSA sanctioned freestyle event, which is an association for competitive skiers with many clubs participating. We have a few important roles to fill this weekend. Most important is a timer, score runner, assistant starter and judges assistant. These are outside jobs and with the predicted weather conditions will need someone willing to dress the part. We also have inside jobs such as helping with registration and selling Core Team merchandise.
To volunteer for a position this weekend or in the upcoming events follow these steps:
I hope you all found your thick coats today! This message contains important information about our first big event of the season, Whalejam. This event, which our team runs, is a key event for our competitive athletes and also an important source of revenue for both the Core Team and Whaleback Mountain. We always need all the help we can get! Plus, after a year with no events, it's a return to some normalcy that we really want to go well.
A couple reminders for Saturday morning Core Team:
Pass pickup will begin at 8am, downstairs in the lodge. Please arrive well before our 9am start because there may be 15-20 people requiring passes.
Core Freestyle, Core Snowboard, and Core Devo Comp will meet in the Core Shack. All other athletes (Core Devo, Minicore Plus, Minicore) will meet upstairs in the lodge. Please be ready by 9am.
Keep an eye out for Whalejam volunteer sign-up. The event is Jan 15 and 16.

Subject:First day of Core Team - Jan 8th Reply-To:
Greetings Core Team families!
I hope you all had a nice holiday season and are ready to kick-off the 2022 season! The board and coaches have been busy getting ready to welcome all athletes and have some fun on the hill. We will start in the upstairs room of the main lodge - please be ready to ski at 9am. As you arrive, look for coaches/board members in Core Team gear and we'll get you to the right coach. After a brief welcome, we will ensure all teams are together and start the day. Parents should be on the deck (outside) to pick up their athletes at the end of training (12pm for Minicore or 2pm for Devo/Core).
A couple reminders:
First day of training is Saturday, Jan. 8th, beginning at 9am
Please make sure all athletes have their passes ahead of time
Dress for the weather with toe/hand warmers if necessary
Groups will take breaks for snack/warming up and also lunch for Devo/Core
Masks/face coverings are required in the lodge, except while eating.
After the teams head outside, I will hang out in the lodge for a while to speak with anyone about the program, events, volunteering, anything!
Thanks for joining this program - we are confident your athletes will have fun, make some new friends, and improve their skiing/riding abilities!
Registration is now open for all 2021-2022 programs! This email contains information on the registration process, programming changes, and schedule for the upcoming Core Team season at Whaleback Mountain.
11/20 - Registration deadline
11/30 - Information session/season kick-off night (time TBD)
12/12 and 12/19 - big mountain ski days at Killington (optional, see below)
1/8/22 - first day of Core Team at Whaleback
Dryland training TBD – likely every weekend in November and early December
- Please register by 11/20 so we can line up our coaching staff.
- Not sure what team to choose? Read the different descriptions in the registration process. If still unclear, reply to this email and I’ll connect you with the right person. Don’t worry...we make changes when the season starts if someone needs to find the right fit.
- Most options remain the same. Three changes:
- There is no fee to participate in dryland training. Schedule TBD, but tentatively plan Nov/Dec weekends.
- Core Freeride will become Core All Mountain and only be Tuesdays and Saturdays (no Thursdays)
- New early season big-mountain option. This $99 option adds on two December ski days at Killington and a mid-season contingency day at Ragged. See full description below.
- Minicore, Minicore Plus, Core Devo, Core Freestyle, and Core Snowboard remain the same and are described on the website in the registration area. (We’re still updating other areas of the website).
New Early Season Big Mountain Days
We normally start the season in January at Whaleback. We received a lot of feedback about the number of training days, especially when there are weather issues at Whaleback. This year, we are offering additional training time. For $99, the following will be included:
- Two training days at Killington Mountain. Dec 12 and Dec 19, 2021.
- A contingency training day at Ragged Mountain if Whaleback is closed on a Saturday and we’re able to divert our training to Ragged.
All Core Team participants are welcome to join us on these days. If you don’t opt for the $99 fee, you’ll just need to secure your own day pass(es).
If you’d like to have a black jacket embroidered with the Core Team logo, please note the links below which show a selection of jackets that can be embroidered. Jackets should be ordered separately by the family. We will then work with you to arrange the embroidering (which will be done locally). Please order ASAP as lead times for everything are very unpredictable. Just to be clear, this is totally optional and neither the jacket nor the logo are required for any athlete.
