Congrats Epiphany Vera - USYS National Rec Coach of the Year!

Hi Harvard Soccer Club families,

Please join me in congratulating Epiphany Vera as winner of the USYS National Boys Recreational Coach of the Year (https://www.usyouthsoccer.org/us-youth-soccer-announces-national-winners-of-annual-awards-/)!

CONGRATULATIONS EPIPHANY!!!

Earlier this fall, you will recall Epiphany won the state (MYSA) Coach of the Year; well he went on to win the regional award and then the National award.

What an incredible year this has been for Harvard soccer!  Epiphany will be receiving his MYSA award at a banquet on January 24. He’ll be traveling to Baltimore for the national awards gala held by US Youth Soccer on January 18th.

Our league president, Andre Mignault, wrote the following in a league notice on this great achievement, which I think captures Epiphany’s contributions very well; and I wanted to share this and emphasize his words on both Epiphany’s contributions and recognition for all of the coaches and volunteer in our town.

Congratulations again, Epiphany!

--Andrew

From Andre Mignault:

I met Epiphany 6 years ago when I joined the NVYSL Board.  I’ve coached against him, I’ve wrangled with him on flight assignments for Harvard's teams, and I’ve depended on him for counsel and advice as we collectively strived to improve the youth soccer experience for every player in NVYSL.  Epiphany exemplifies the passion, investment, and love for the game that all NVYSL Coaches exercise at every weeknight practice, every Coach certification class, every communication with a concerned parent, every halftime speech, every gameday, etc.

Epiphany’s national recognition by USYS is obviously a tremendous personal accomplishment, for which he deserves our praise and recognition.  But his success also gives us a moment to pause and reflect on the absolutely crucial role that ALL Coaches play in our league, and in every youth sports organization.  I’ve said for years in our NVYSL meetings that Coaches are our fundamentally most important contributors to the constitutional mission of NVYSL... nobody else juggles such a dizzying array of challenges on the front lines to deliver quality soccer experiences to every Player.  Quite simply, a Coach's energy and investment has the power to transform recreational youth soccer into a powerful positive influence on the lives of young people.

Energized and inspired by Epiphany’s story and his newfound recognition at the local, state, regional, and national levels, I’ll ask our NVYSL Board of Directors to declare 2020 the “Year of the Coach”.  Under this theme, NVYSL can spearhead a series of trainings, incentives, and programs designed to invest in the quality of the coaching experience in our league.  As a new decade emerges, let’s focus our attention on the most effective resource we have to deliver a safe, healthy, and transformative experience to our youth soccer players... our COACHES!

Thanks to Epiphany for guiding the way through his example, an example which has now achieved national prominence!  Thanks to every administrator, official, and volunteer in our 21 Clubs dedicated to building a thriving youth soccer experience.  And thanks to our hundreds of Coaches for their service, performing that most difficult and most rewarding duty for our kids.

Congratulations Epiphany Vera - MYSA Boys Rec Coach of the Year!

I am thrilled to share that Coach Epiphany Vera has been selected as the 2019 Mass Youth Soccer Boys Recreational Coach of the Year.  'MYSA' has over 200,000 players and volunteers. This is a state-wide award across many thousands of coaches, highly competitive across all towns with soccer programs.  Congratulations and well deserved, 'Coach E!'  Please join me in congratulating Epiphany if you see him around town.

As a club, we are incredibly fortunate to have Epiphany involved in our program.  He has been coaching in the club for over 10 years, and has brought passion and dedication to the role each year.  Epiphany most recently was a coach for the Boys 78 and 910 teams this past Spring - yep, two teams! - and continues to give a ton of time to soccer, even in the 'off' season.  Here are some highlights from the nomination submitted for Epiphany - a compilation of input and observations from many of the families he has touched:

Epiphany Vera, “Coach E”, embodies the definition of sportsmanship. He has earned the respect and admiration of players, parents, and the community by serving as a model of ethical, polite and fair behavior in sport and life. Our boys have learned from Coach E how to respect and play by the rules, commit to fairness and integrity while competing vigorously, and offer graciousness in the face of a loss.  Coach E is a primary factor in establishing genuine sportsmanship wthin a generation of younsters in Harvard.

Epiphany is intensely committed to player development. In addition to coaching town teams, he has organized and coached indoor teams for years. Epiphany sustains high levels of effort year-after-year because he is genuinely passionate about the game, desires to give the boys opportunities to play, and sustains a deep commitment to continual improvement.

Coach E’s approach to player development is further illuminated by a few stories:
- At the end of a championship indoor season, Coach orchestrated a pizza party for the boys where he showed a video of Tom Brady describing his professional journey from 199 th draft pick underdog becoming an international model for commitment to one’s sport in training, diet, and lifestyle. He then proceeded to recognize each boy individually for his particular skill and contribution.
- Coach E is known for sending personalized notes to players offering encouragement and guidance.
- This past winter, Epiphany added 10-weeks of futsal training to build footwork, ball control and the ability to operate in tight spaces.

Epiphany has lead the way in establishing a vibrant and heathy soccer culture in our community. Coach E has coached boys Spring and Fall seasons for the Harvard Soccer Club for  over a decade....Additionally Epiphany is a community volunteer. He has coached Math Olympiad for over a decade. He served as a Cub Scout leader for many years. He volunteers for the Bromfield Reality Fair and the Science Fair.

This is just the tip of the iceberg of the nomination application- there are so many great examples of Epiphany's leadership and contributions as a coach in town, both in the application and beyond.  We are proud, humbled, and lucky to have you, Coach E!  Thank you for the many years of dedication you have brought to our program, and the values and love of the game that you have brought to our youth.

Sincerely,

Andrew Thomas
President
The Harvard Soccer Club
