Fall 2021 Season Update

To:      All Fort Youth Tackle Football Parents and Coaches

From: Shawn Strasburg – President, FYTF

Re:      2021 FYTF Season Update

Date:   August 2, 2021

Dear Parents, Coaches, and Players,

I would first like to thank Mark Haubenschild, Ron Jordan, Becky Britzke, Brian Aarstad, and the many other servants to this program over the past 30+ years. It is because of their tireless efforts that so many young men and women have enjoyed playing youth football.

As Mark stated last week, the past FYTF Board has transitioned its duties to a new Board of Directors:

Shawn Strasburg – President

Greg Riddell – Vice President

Steve Rottmann – Treasurer

Chris Ketterhagen – Secretary

Troy Enger, Ryan Huber, and TJ Sullivan – At Large Members

I assure you that we are committed to providing a safe, fun, and memorable youth football experience, and cannot thank you all enough for your patience over the past few months while the new board was oriented to the process and official transition occurred.

I am happy to report that in coordination with Fort Parks and Recreation, Fort Atkinson High School varsity football, and community input we have defined a path forward not only for this 2021 season, but for years to come. With this new plan in motion, our goal remains the same as it always has; teach the fundamentals of football to all participants and to have fun doing so. Here is the plan that the Board has adopted:

  • Grades 6th – 8th
    • These players will participate in the Badger East Youth Football tackle football league consisting of more “local” teams: Cambridge, Columbus, Jefferson, Johnson Creek, Lake Mills, Lakeside Lutheran, Marshall, McFarland, and Whitewater. More information about the Badger East YFL can be found here.
    • To better align with fees of the other Badger East YFL programs, FYTF will be reducing its fees for grades 6-8 to $150/player. For those that have paid fees in full or had fees carried over from last year will receive a refund for the difference in fees paid. We are working on the best way to accomplish this.
    • 6th graders will not incur a $60 surcharge to meet the $150 fee this year.
    • Given our current numbers at grades 7th and 8th grade, there will likely be a scenario that 7th graders will play up with the 8th graders coached by Dan Page.
    • 6th graders should have enough to field its own team coached by Troy Enger.
    • There will be no bussing to/from away games.
    • Timeline of events (detailed schedule to follow)
      • 6th – 8th grade baseline concussion screening TBD
      • 8/16/2021 – Equipment handout and in-person registration
      • 8/17/2021 – Practice begins
      • 8/28/2021 – Games begin (schedule being defined)

  • Grades 4th – 5th
    • These players will participate in padded flag intersquad competition, with the possibility of playing the same teams in the Badger East Youth Football league; listed above. More information to follow as this develops.
    • The rationale for splitting 5th and 6th graders is to keep elementary students together, while building the team comradery by school through out the season.
    • FYTF is reducing its padded flag fees to $75/player. For those that have paid fees in full or had fees carried over from last year will receive a refund for the difference in fees paid. We are working on the best way to accomplish this.
    • Timeline of events (detailed schedule to follow)
      • 9/7/2021 – Equipment handout and in-person registration
      • 9/8/2021 – Practice begins
      • 9/18/2021 – Games begin (schedule being defined)

  • 3rd Grade
    • 3rd graders are not being playing padded flag through the FYTF program as originally planned. We encourage all 3rd graders to register online with Fort Atkinson Parks and Recreation; click here.
    • A plan is being devised for Fort Atkinson Parks and Recreation flag football players to play at Kiwanis Field on Saturdays alongside the “big kids” playing football with a goal to create excitement and desire to play in future years.
    • The fee to play with Fort Atkinson Parks and Recreation is $52/player.
    • All fees paid to FYTF will be refunded to the families. We are working on the best way to accomplish this.

  • For all grade levels, we are planning our annual Youth Night for September 10th, Fort Atkinson Varsity Football’s Homecoming!

We understand there is a lot to unpack here, so please do not hesitate to ask questions through the website or Facebook. Again, thank you all for your patience over the past couple months. We look forward to seeing you all this fall.

Last, we will communicate any sanitation protocols that may have to be implemented to safely play football at the guidance, or requirement, from the county, state, or federal government.

Respectfully,

Shawn Strasburg

President, Fort Youth Tackle Football
