Welcome to a new season of Marblehead Girls U7 Lacrosse! Below are important details and dates as we
approach the official start the season.
MISSION The mission of our program is to promote girls youth lacrosse in an environment that
emphasizes fun, while developing skills, teamwork, good sportsmanship, and integrity. We follow the
rules and regulations set forth by US Lacrosse and Founders Girls Lacrosse League and strive to always
“honor the game.” Coaches and parents at this level should emphasize FUN, good sportsmanship, trying
new skills in a team setting, and learning and exploring overall play of the game.
SCHEDULE Starting May 2nd, U7 Clinics will begin on Sundays 8-9am on Village School Middle
Field and run through 6/13 with the exception of Memorial Day Weekend. No clinic on 5/30.
FORMAT U7 clinics are run by volunteer parent-coaches who will introduce the girls to concepts and
terms, teach basic lacrosse skills and build hand-eye coordination through simple drills and stations and
build up to small-sided play (i.e. 5v5 or 7v7) on shortened fields using small 4’x’4’ goals. The smallsided
format encourages the development of fundamentals and understanding game play. Standard field
positions for 7v7 include 2 defense players, 3 midfielders and 2 attack players. Instead of goalies, we
place shot blockers on goal cages. More information on the format and competition guidelines for U8
girls on USLacrosse.com.
COMMUNICATIONS will come via email from U7 Age Group Coordinator Dan Cummings through
the MHDGirlsLax.org website with reminders as we get closer to the start of U7 clinics. If you wish to
add/change recipient emails, please log in to your parent account at MHDGirlsLax.org and make
WEATHER Please check email if weather is questionable before clinic. We will do our best to email in a
timely fashion if we need to cancel. Marblehead field status is available online: https://
www.marblehead.org/recreation-parks-department/pages/athletic-fields and you can sign up for push
notifications of changes to the status of grass fields. (Note: in early spring, Rec&Park has been known to
close town grass fields after heavy rains).
UNIFORMS & EQUIPMENT Each player will be given a MHD Girls Lax U7 T-shirt on the first day
which should be worn for Sunday clinics. She may wear whatever else she prefers under her shirt and
below (i.e shorts, leggings, sweatshirt/pants). Cleats are recommended for grass fields, but not required.
Please make sure all laces are double knotted! Warm layers are strongly suggested for early spring
practices— sweats, fleece, wind jacket, gloves, hat. It can be windy on Village. Hair should be pulled
back off faces. **Mouth guards and eye goggles are mandatory**; we cannot let players participate safely without
them. They can be purchased at the MHD Sports Shop, Lacrosse Unlimited in Danvers or online. Mouth
guards should be molded and have nothing protruding from the mouth (if it comes with a "leash" simply
remove/cut it off after moulding -- it cannot be attached to goggles). Please adjust goggles at
home making sure they are snug and won’t fall off in practice!
COVID SAFETY Masks are required for all and should be the type that loop over the ears. We
recommend each player bring her own personal reusable, well marked water bottle, tissues and hand
sanitizer. No sharing of personal items, water or food. Please have your child arrive fully dressed, ready
to play. Attached please find a Player/Parent Safety Pledge we ask you to review and sign.
BEGINNER STICKS The program provides players with beginner “fiddle” sticks to use for clinics.
These are smaller lightweight sticks that help new players learn to scoop, throw and catch the ball. We
also play with slightly smaller “pinkie” soft rubber balls which are less intimidating to catch and toss
around. Stay tuned for another email as we get closer to May 2nd. Be sure to track down goggles and mould a
mouthguard now. If you have any questions, please email Program Director Kim Hutchinson or U7
Coordinator Dan Cummings (781-718-9587).
