Great Game Tonight!
by posted 07/08/2020

Team,

"I love winning... it's like, better than losing." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" Laloosh, Bull Durham

We've still got a lot of work to do to fulfill our team's potential, but tonight was a good start in seeing what we have to work on in future practices. We're going to continue working on hitting, but by the end of the weekend, I should have a good idea of the best positions for your sons and for the team this season. At Monday's practice, we'll focus on positions (and yes, it says "game" in the schedule, but it's a practice). With two games a week for the next month, I'm going to try and have one practice night a week as well. I'd love to see y'all at all three, but if you have other things going on, just let me know when you can't be there so I can adjust the drills or lineups accordingly.

Some quick notes:

  • Stats are posted and will be updated after each game. There's no spot for most of the defensive stats, but I am going to keep track of assists. Pretty much everything in this division relates to batting though.
  • We had 12 hits in 19 at bats, for a .631 average, with three doubles and 7 hits in a row at one point. We'll win some games if we can keep that up.
  • There's a 5 run max rule per inning, which is why we ended the third inning with only one out and the bases loaded.
  • White sheet rules (local league rules) state that when the ball hits the machine on a hit, all runners advance one base. You'll see this crop up more than you'd think. That's why Chris advanced to third and Sean advanced home even though there was no force on the play where the machine was hit.
  • The league sent out an announcement this afternoon that players can play the catcher position without gear if they move away from the traditional position and wear a helmet too. Basically, they are close to home and when the ball is put into play, they can cover the base. While Jonathan has volunteered to try and learn catcher, we also need some volunteers willing to play an inning here or there so he can get a break out of all that hot gear.
  • A left handed glove was left on the top bleachers - if it belongs to your son, please let me know.
  • Everyone there tonight should have a full uniform, except for a pair of pants I need to exchange for the correct size. At this point, you should have received a hat, jersey, pants, and belt. If you are missing anything, or somehow ended up with an extra, please let me know.

We'll see you on Saturday! It's in the heat of the day, so please make sure to have your players hydrate.

Thanks,

James

Charlie, here comes the deuce...
by posted 07/07/2020

Team,

I'm excited about our first game Wednesday. For our first couple of games, I'm still going to be learning about the kids, so the batting order and lineup will undoubtedly have some errors or holes in it. After this week, I'll continue shifting the fielding somewhat in order to ensure we don't specialize kids too much, and to try and find the best defensive positions for each player to support the team. If you have a favorite position you'd like to see your son play, great! Let me know and we'll practice him there more, and if he performs in practice, we'll put him there in a game - as long as it doesn't hurt the team. In the meantime, I'll be trying to put players at the best position for the team - which may not be your player's best overall position.

For our batting order, it'll largely be determined by how well they hit in the first couple of games. So, if your son isn't high in the order tomorrow, don't despair. As he collects more hits, he'll move up accordingly. Last season, our second best hitter on the season was batting 9th our first game. When he figured out the machine in our third game, he went from 9th to 5th in under a week, and flip-flopped between 3rd and 4th the rest of the season because he hit for power too. I keep and post the stats on the site for each game, so it should be pretty clear. When we have a cluster of players who are all performing relatively close to one another, I'll shift them around a bit to try different combinations of hitters together too.

Uniforms are supposed to be delivered tomorrow, so please try and arrive a few minutes early if you can to get your uniform and warm up. Generally, please try to arrive no more than 15 minutes prior to game time in order to ensure your player gets warmed up. As a reminder, the league is using the bleachers as an extended dugout and requesting that players not use the bat racks in order to allow for social distancing to occur during games. I've seen some teams congregating in the dugout, but we will be using the bleachers. Frankly, I think the risk is low, but low <> 0, so we're going to be extra cautious.

If for whatever reason you know your player will not be in attendance, please let me know ASAP so I can adjust the lineups accordingly. The rules regarding bench rotations and every player having an infield position can make it tough to make up changes on the fly, so the more notice I can get to plan out the innings, the better.

Last, but not least, I got the word tonight that they are lowering the pitch speed a bit. With my machine, we've been practicing at about 42 MPH as the spring is still pretty new. I *think* we'll end up in the 36 MPH range, which will be good for us. It's far easier to adjust to slower speeds than to catch up to a fastball - especially when you know it's coming. https://youtu.be/VEFP35Xs2KY?t=43

Thanks,

One more item - Uniform Pants
by posted 07/01/2020

Team,

I know at least one parent approached me and let me know that they did not receive uniform pants from their previous coach. If you fall into this category, please e-mail me with the size desired so I can get you a pair when we receive the rest of our uniforms.

Thanks,

James

Hitting Groups for Tomorrow Night
by posted 07/01/2020

Team,

Here are the hitting groups for tomorrow night. Each group will do tee work and cage work for approximately 30 minutes each, similar to our first post-COVID practice. There is no need to arrive more than a few minutes early for your group's time, and similarly, once your slot's time is over, you're good to start your holiday weekend off early. So, with that said, here's our current schedule (if this makes it tough for you, please let me know and I'll see about switching).

Thanks,

James

Grayson

Jonathan

James

Sean

Group 2 - 6:30 - 7:

Hitting Practice Tomorrow Night
by posted 07/01/2020

Team,

We have a cage for Thursday night, and since the fields are pretty full, we're going to run our practice similar to our first batting age one. I'll send out some groups and we'll divvy up the practice times. Once your child's slot is over, feel free to take them home. Similarly, if your child is in a later slot, please feel free to skip the first part of the practice. If you know for certain you will be missing practice, please let me know ASAP so I can ensure we have the groups evenly distributed. I'll send out the groups at approximately 6pm tonight based on what I hear back today.

Thanks,

James
