The New Canaan High School Girls Tennis team has a rich history, and we look forward to having student-athletes join our family and contribute to future successes. Tennis is a spring sport at New Canaan High School. The regular season is from late March-Mid May. The FCIAC/CIAC team tournaments begin in May and can run through June. The Individual CIAC Tournament is the 1stweekend in June and the following week.
To provide an opportunity for athletes to develop as tennis players and compete, while representing their school and community. To have student/athletes grow and understand the value of healthy competition and integrity, good sportsmanship while keeping it low stress and more importantly, fun. We want to promote a supportive team environment and encourage players to do their best on and off the court.
Pre-Season Meeting for student athletes interested in getting more information about NCGT will be held on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 @ NCHS in room 201 from 2:10PM-2:40PM. Please note, it is not mandatory to attend this meeting. You will still be able to tryout in March if you are not at the meeting. The Captains will post details for NCGT on the New Canaan Girls Tennis Facebook page too.At this meeting the following will be done:
Introduce the coaches and captains
Give an overview of tryout format and dates
Provide specific guidelines and rules
Provide tentative practice, match and tournament schedules
Encourage players to register on ncrams.com for Girls Tennis under the Spring Sports tab. Also discuss, the importance of having updated medical forms handed into Kristina Bell in the Athletic Department (girls will not be allowed to tryout if they are not registered on ncrams.com and do not have an updated medical form handed into Kristina).
Tryouts begin Saturday March 21st from 1:30-3:30 and continue the following week, Monday-Friday from 2:30-4:00.) Players will be notified in March the days they are to attend.
Tryout format will be mostly singles sets (even for doubles players). All players will have a minimum of 2 days to tryout. Scores will be recorded, but other factors will be taken into account such as attitude, strokes, team commitment and experience.
It is not required for individuals to train during the fall or winter, and an athlete will not be penalized if they do not play year-round. (however, it is encouraged since, New Canaan is in the very competitive FCIAC conference.)
Varsity players from previous years will not automatically be on Varsity. Everyone will be required to tryout to secure a Varsity position.
Varsity players are required to be here during the 1sthalf of the week during spring break in April. Also, those players who qualify for CIAC State Tournament, will be required to participate in this event. This event occurs the 1stweekend in June.
Freshman can and have made Varsity in the past, but if an athlete does not make the team as a freshman, there will still be future opportunities for them to become contributing members on the Varsity team.
Typically, the Varsity Roster will consist of 12-14 girls, and JV roster will have 16-20 girls. Every attempt will be made to not cut any players, but this cannot be guaranteed.
All players should wear the red and black colors with pride, represent NC with class, and show respect for opponents and their fans/coaches.
