NFHS Baseball Program -

UPDATE 5/8....

1) Apparel orders purchased from the Diamond Club the night of the parent/player meeting are at Vision Design/All Star. The apparel has been in the shop since mid-March, but has not been screen printed. Vision Design & All Star are closed, but they are hopeful that they will be able to process the screen printing at the end of the month. I will keep everyone posted when the order is complete.

2) The player packages (pre-game shirt, game pants, socks and belts) were ordered as well, but we will be keeping that in storage for next season.

3) CIAC COVID-19 Update (May 7, 2020)--The CIAC appreciates and respects the efforts made by Governor Lamont and Commissioner Cardona to keep our school communities safe. The CIAC’s consideration for any spring sport experience was always contingent on the re-opening of schools for in-person instruction. Per Governor Lamont’s order, in-school classes have been cancelled for the remainder of the 2019- 2020 school year. Therefore, there will not be a 2020 CIAC spring sports season. The CIAC empathizes with our school communities and the experiences lost due to COVID-19. Our focus is now on completing guidelines for summer contact and resocialization to CIAC fall sports

At the May 7, 2020 CIAC Board of Control meeting, the following actions were taken in response to COVID-19 related issues:

  • OUT-OF-SEASON RULE (One Year Agreement)
    • Virtual coaching will be allowed for spring sport coaches through May 31, 2020. Starting June 1, all coaches will be permitted to have virtual contact, which includes skill instruction and conditioning, until August 17, 2020.
    • Provided the governors orders allows summer sports to resume, spring coaches may coach their spring athletes until August 17, 2020, provided it is a non-school affiliated program.
  • FALL ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY (One Year Agreement)
    • When determining eligibility for fall sports, any incomplete grades will be considered a passing grade until the end of the first marking period.
  • TRANSFER RULE (One Year Agreement)
  • If the receiving school submitted the CIAC transfer notification form and it had been processed by the CIAC office, which established sitting out 50% of the spring 2020 season, those students will be immediately eligible to participate in interscholastic sports, if otherwise eligible.

CIAC staff will continue to meet and develop guidelines for resocialization to fall sports. It is important for everyone to continue their efforts in maintaining social distancing and preventing the spread of COVID-19. When the time is right, CIAC will play again!

UPDATE (5/6)...

As I am sure we have all heard... the CIAC has canceled the 2020 CIAC spring sports season. Please read their note to the public below.

CHESHIRE, Conn. -The CIAC’s consideration for any spring sport experience has always been contingent on the re-opening of schools for in-person instruction. This morning, Governor Lamont ordered the cancellation of in-school classes for the remainder of the 2019-2020 academic year. Therefore, there will not be a 2020 CIAC spring sports season. The CIAC empathizes with our school communities and the experiences lost due to COVID-19. Our focus is now on completing guidelines for summer contact and resocialization of CIAC sports in the fall.

The coaching staff will continue to meet with the boys once a week, continue posting workouts and continue to create fun challenges. Most if not all of our players that registered and payed the pay to play fee should have received a refund. If you have not received a refund, please reach out to me and I will create a list for Mrs. Stolle. I will follow up with an email later in the week with a bit more information on what is to come of our virtual baseball season.

Try your best to remain positive, continue to stay on top of your distance learning program, and please continue to follow the guidelines of social distancing while being active.

Thanks

Coach Garbowski

UPDATE (4/24)...

News from yesterdays CIAC meeting...

CIAC COVID-19 Update (April 23)

The CIAC appreciates and respects the efforts made by Governor Lamont and Commissioner Cardona to keep our school communities safe. All potential spring sport opportunities are contingent upon the governor’s office and the state department of education declaring that it is safe to return to school campuses and for athletic competition to resume. If it is determined that school buildings will remain closed, and distance learning will continue through the end of the 2019-2020 school year, then the CIAC will cancel all spring sport experiences.

After much consideration, the CIAC has decided that any potential spring sports experiences will be limited to the month of June. Carrying spring sport experiences from the current school year into July presents significant challenges for school districts and student-athletes.

The CIAC has also decided that we will not run any spring state championship events. It is our position that any spring sports experience should maximize opportunities for student-athletes within individual schools and leagues.

In considering these decisions, the CIAC surveyed superintendents, principals, and athletic directors. In addition, we consulted with the Connecticut State Medical Society, Sports Medicine Committee. We also collaborated with Commissioner Cardona, sought input from the Department of Public Health, and received numerous communications from student-athletes and parents. As we prepare for our May 7th CIAC Board of Control meeting, we will continue collaboration with all stakeholder groups. We anticipate further guidance from the Commissioner Cardona and Governor Lamont on the status of school closures, as well as criteria for safely returning to community events and activities.

In addition to spring sport experience, the following topics were also discussed:

• Sports Physicals – In consultation with the Connecticut State Medical Society, Sports Medicine Committee, the standard of physicals being valid for a 13-month period will remain.

• Mandatory Practice Days – In consultation with the Connecticut State Medical Society, Sports Medicine Committee, 10 days of practice/conditioning prior to competition will remain. However, 5 days may be conducted at home, by individual student-athletes. The remaining 5 days must be with a coach.

• Academic Eligibility for Students with Incomplete – Discussion on this topic will continue at the May 7th meeting.

• Out-of-Season Coaching and Rostered Students - Discussion on this topic will continue at the May 7th meeting.

• Transfer Rule Eligibility for Fall Sports - Discussion on this topic will continue at the May 7th meeting.

• Criteria for Reopening Interscholastic Athletic Competition - Discussion on this topic will continue at the May 7th meeting, pending guidance from the governor’s office, state department of education, and the department of public health.

UPDATE (4/13)....

NFHS Baseball Program Google Classroom is ready to go. Please use this code to join the "Rebel Baseball 2020" class. Class code is 5intjoi. The coaches plan is to start posting at home workouts, drills, and fun activities for all of the players in our Google class by the end of the week. We are also planning to meet as a group once a week on Zoom to discuss baseball and connect as a team. Please note that this is not mandatory or a requirement, it is simply a way to socialize and catch up while waiting to get back on the field.

I look forward to sharing some of the experiences with our parents through email and possibly social media. Please follow New Fairfield Baseball on Twitter, Instagram, and/or Facebook if you are interested. We have been posting some pictures of past seasons... check it out.

UPDATE (4/11)....

Me again... just checking in to wish everyone a Happy Easter Weekend! I have three things for you today...

  • CT School Closing update -- May 20th **just a FYI... NY City Schools just announced that they will be closed for the remainder of the year.
  • A quick update from the CIAC....
    • The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference now has the guideline it needs to try and make a determination whether or not it will even be possible to have some semblance of a spring sports season. Gov. Ned Lamont announced on Thursday afternoon that all state schools will now be closed through May 20 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That extends the first deadline by exactly one month. Miguel Cardona, the Connecticut commissioner of education, said a decision whether or not schools would stay closed for the remainder of the school year likely will come before the new deadline. “I don’t interpret the May 20th date as a return-to-school date. I see it as a deadline that the next update will be given on the potential return to school,” CAS-CIAC Executive Director Glenn Lungarini said. Lugarini said more virtual meetings with a variety of groups will be held beginning Monday. Lungarini said an additional CIAC Board of Control meeting has been added on April 23 where a final decision could be made on the spring season. There is still a Board of Control meeting scheduled for May 7. “We will have more detailed conversations with superintendents, principals, athletic directors, member leagues, medical professionals and coaches. Then we will review feedback (at the April 23 meeting) from each group and discuss safe and realistic spring sport experiences,” Lungarini said. June is realistically the only month where any type of season could happen. June 13, the last possible day to play spring sports, has not been waived yet. Lungarini had also previously floated the idea of playing into July. “July have raised more questions than answers. Nobody we’ve talked to has taken July off the table, but in those same discussions, we certainly have raised additional questions and areas of concern,” Lungarini said.
  • Google Classroom - we will be starting our very own Google Classroom for the player and coaches. This will give us an opportunity to communicate daily, have video conferences once a week and lay out some social distancing drills/exercises for all of the players. Keep an eye out for an invite early next week.

Thanks

Coach Garbowski

UPDATE (4/6)...

Sunny and 65 degrees! Today would have been the season opener for Varsity and JV at Norwalk High School. I know this is tough for all the boys, but I want you to stay positive and keep the hope alive that this season will happen! I continue to believe until I hear differently. As you all know, the CIAC had their monthly meeting last week and stated that their goal is to provide the students in CT an opportunity at a 2020 spring season.

Keep the positive thoughts rolling, stay focused in the distance learning program, and please continue to follow the guidelines of social distancing. We've got this!!! #rebelpride #staystrong #lovefirstresponders

UPDATE (4/1)...

I hope everyone is doing well, staying safe, staying on top of your school work and trying your best to stay active while following the guidelines of social distancing. I wanted to follow up with Mrs. Stolle's tweet (tweet is below) on being ready for the spring season once we get the green light. Please make sure you have registered in Family ID. Remember,  you cannot play if you are not registered in Family ID.

Thanks

Coach Joe Garbowski

UPDATE (3/18)...

I am sure most of you have been informed via social media... CIAC announced the following today....

Following an online meeting with nearly 70 school, athletic and governmental leaders CIAC reached a consensus that canceling the entirety of the spring sports season is premature at this time. There is a strong desire to provide student athletes some spring athletic experience if possible. Any plan for spring sports will need to adhere to the guidelines from the Governor’s office, Department of Education and health experts regarding the potential reopening of schools to establish a specific time frame.

“These are unprecedented challenges for our schools, and it is of the utmost importance that we provide answers and a structure to support our membership and maintain the possibility of a spring sports experience for our student-athletes,” CAS-CIAC Executive Director Glenn Lungarini stated. “CIAC understands the value of providing students a spring sports experience, if possible. However, the health and safety of our communities must remain at the center of our decision making.”

The online meeting discussion emphasized that while student-athletes may want to begin preparations for a potential season that respecting the recommendations for social distancing and avoiding group activities prior to the approved time will aid in keeping athletes safe and allow for the season to begin in a timely manner if approved. The uncertainty of the timeline for school openings requires the understanding that any plans to begin spring sports will be fluid and should have the ability to reflect the different needs of different school communities.

As of today this is what we know...

  • We cannot start spring sports until school is back in session and the CIAC gives the go ahead
  • The expected start date of school is April 1st

I will send an email out this Sunday to keep you informed with any update/progress we might have on the season. Please stay safe and do your best to respect the recommendations for social distancing.

Thanks

Coach Joe Garbowski

Season UPDATE (3/13)....

As you are all aware... New Fairfield Public Schools and offices are closed until further notice. This being said, the start of the high school baseball season is also on hold until further notice. I know we may have a lot of questions/concerns regarding the 2020 season, the remainder of the school year and this virus. Unfortunately, this is all uncharted territory for everyone involved and those questions/concerns are shared by our administrators as well. The one thing I know for sure is the decisions made and ones that lie ahead are made with the best interest of our public's health. These next few days and/or weeks are going to be tolling on many and the last thing we need to do in our community is to add stress to an already stressful situation. So I politely ask you all to sit tight, take care of your family, and be helpful in this time of need. I promise to keep you all up to date with any reports, progress or news... as soon as I know you will... promise!

Things that I do know...

  • Pitchers and Catchers and the "Rebel Challenge" is canceled on Sunday March 15th
  • I will send an email out Sunday night regarding the rest of the week... pitchers and catchers / "rebel challenge"
  • The SWC Athletic Directors met today to discuss the Spring Sports Season. They shared their discussion with the CIAC Officials to better help their process in making decisions on the 2020 CT High School Spring Season.
  • The CIAC Officials are meeting next Wednesday to discuss how to move forward with the 2020 CT High School Spring Sports Season.

Thank you,

Coach Joe Garbowski
