The Ridgefield cross country and track and field community lost an icon today. Coach Bill Owens passed away this morning at his Ridgefield home after a ten month battle with brain cancer.

Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 7 in the sanctuary at Jesse Lee Church on Main St in Ridgefield. A reception will follow at the Carriage House on the church property from noon to 3 pm.

Cards can be sent to 19 Lookout Pt, Ridgefield CT 06877-1914

In 2002, Bill was asked to temporarily take the boys cross country head coaching job at Ridgefield while the school looked for someone to lead all three seasons. Ridgefield girls coach, Sandy Hoddinott, then recruited Bill as his assistant for indoor track, outdoor track, and cross country. He served as an assistant coach through the 2019 outdoor track season.

Bill ran track and cross country in high school and for two years at the University of Arkansas. After graduating from Arkansas he went on to get a masters and PhD in chemical engineering from Oklahoma State. Athletes often asked what the coaches discussed during practice and bus rides other than track and field. With Coach Owens, the answer was “oil and gas pipelines.” He had some great stories about pipelines. He was also an avid programmer and was kind enough to make sure the other coaches knew how all of his automated track tools worked.

Bill and his infectious sense of humor will be greatly missed.
