Like everything else, CRHL will look a little different for this season. We do hope to continue our traditions of competition, some good exercise (or gliding for some) and lots of laughs, however we do have a bunch of new protocols to ensure the safety and continuity of the club as a whole. Here are the key points to be aware of:
Same as last season, the goal will be to have 6 teams all playing games on Sunday nights.
Adult players will follow the same protocols as our children for entering the rink, lacing up and exiting the rink.
(Very) unfortunately there will be no post-game gathering or lingering. Players are asked to leave the club immediately after games, same as our kids. This is subject to review if the current environment changes, but initially post-game will need to occur somewhere between your couch and fridge.
There will be a max of 13 players per team per game. This will allow for safe as possible distancing on the benches. Captains will manage the 13 max per game roster for each game.
Registration will have a hard stop of November 2nd. If you miss the deadline, you are out, no exceptions this year. We hope to start playing games or scrimmage on Nov 8th.
Because of the player cap, there will be NO guests allowed on rosters or to play in ANY games this year. This includes children, siblings, etc. Registration will be restricted to full members, vacation members and coaching members.
With the player cap, we ask that you only register if you are committed to playing 75% or more of the games. We ask that any “part time” players take a break this year.
Temperatures are cooling and skating season is almost here! This season will obviously look a little different from years past, but we are working to make classes fun and memorable for your children while developing their skating skills and keeping everyone safe. Class offerings will remain consistent with last year, though class sizes will be limited, so it is important to register quickly to get your first choices.

1. KEY DATES
We are planning on a full schedule of event offerings this Winter, although these events may have to be changed or canceled due to COVID restrictions. Our current plan is for the following events schedule:
First Day of Classes:Saturday, November 7, 2020
(dependent upon rink conditions)
Figure Skating Holiday Free Skate:Sunday, December 6, 2020
during Pre-Paid time @ 12:30-2:30pm
GSC/NCWC Competition @ NCWC:Saturday, January 30, 2021
Entries Due: Friday, January 29, 2021
“Showtime” End-of-Season Show:Friday, March 5th, 2021, 6pm
We are fortunate to have an outdoor, open-air rink, which allows for optimal air circulation as an added layer of safety beyond current CDC, State, Town and US Figure Skating protocols. More detailed information can be found on the waiver found during the registration process. Highlights of the GSC protocols are listed below (subject to change as new CDC/state/local/USFS guidelines are announced):
Parents are responsible for taking the temperature of their skater, as well as checking for any symptoms of Covid-19, before coming to the rink. Anyone with a fever or exhibiting COVID or flu symptoms must not come.
Sign-in at front entrance for contact tracing purposes. Door signs will list mask rules and Covid precaution protocols. Entrances and exits will be marked clearly.
Limit of one parent (or other adult) per skater to help and/or spectate at the rink. Spectating will be in designated areas only and subject to reduced capacity levels.
Class sizes will be limited to 5 skaters per coach with approximately 25 people on the rink at one time.
Coaches will wear a mask at all times. Skaters’ masks, while on the ice, will be optional.
Coaches will aim to keep skaters socially distanced and will not allow close contact for an extended period of time.
Masks are required to be worn inside the clubhouse. Outside, masks are optional when socially distanced by 6 feet. Please also ensure distancing of 6 feet on benches.
Skaters will be asked to come to the club dressed and ready to skate. Locker rooms will not be open for changing. We suggest purchasing hard skate guards to minimize time on benches tying and untying skates.
General Skate will be on a sign-up basis using an online reservation system.
Clubhouse surfaces will be cleaned throughout the day with bathroom cleaning every half-hour.
3. CLASS REGISTRATION
Before you register for classes, there are a few helpful things to remember.
Read through the class descriptions on the website to determine which class(es) is/are appropriate for your child.
You can register for more than one class per day. The classes build on each other so we encourage you to register for more than one class if you feel your child is ready for the longer instruction time.
Purchasing the additional Figure Skating Only Pre-paid Ice Time is very beneficial to all figure skaters who plan on participating in the skating competition with New Canaan Winter Club and for figure skaters practicing for the Year End Show at GSC. Prepaid ice time is only for figure skaters who have registered for the Prepaid Ice Time.
Kris Birkeland is the head Figure Skating pro and is the best resource if you have questions regarding what level to register your skater for.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us – that’s what we are here for!
We so look forward to seeing your children back on the ice this Winter and thank you in advance for your valued cooperation with keeping our community safe!
In order to minimize the number of skaters on the ice at one time, we are adding a third session to mini mites for this season. Skaters may register for 2 of the four sessions and those days will remain constant throughout the season. Each session is limited to 30 skaters.
Mini Mite sessions for this season will be held at the following times. Please register for 2 sessions only:
Fridays 4:00-4:45pm at Greenwich Skating Club
Fridays 4:45-5:30pm at Greenwich Skating Club
Saturdays 7:00-7:50am at Greenwich Skating Club
Sundays 7-8am at Greenwich Skating Club
Program cost: $550 (plus $55 state excise tax)

This program is designed for the younger skater who is relatively new to hockey or who is learning to skate and is interested in playing hockey. It is designed to teach the fundamentals of skating and an introduction to the game. The kids will work on basic skating skills (edge work, stopping, cross-overs and backward skating) as well as introduction to the basics of hockey such as passing, shooting, and stick handling. Full hockey pads, helmets and sticks are required. Please contact Brent Brower at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
