Instructor Bios

 

Alvie Shepherd

Alvie was the 1992 Illinois High School Player of the year.  He was drafted in the 32nd round of the Major League Draft but he chose to attend the University of Nebraska.  He was a First Team, Big 8 All Conference Designated Hitter.  He was also the hardest throwing pitcher in the country with a fastball clocked at 98MPH. 

The Baltmore Orioles made Alvie the 21st pick in the first round of the 1995 Major League Baseball Draft.  He played for the Orioles, Mets and Angels before retiring in 2000.  He’s been a private instructor and High School baseball coach ever since.  He’s been coaching Red Dogs and Hinsdale Little Leaguers for over 10 years.

Alvie teaches hitting, fielding and pitching.  He also stresses the mental side of the game.  Most of all, Alvie keeps it fun and inspires young players to focus and be their best.



 


 

Kevin Rios

Kevin played collegiately at Concordia University.  He was drafted by the New York Mets in the 26th round of the Major League Baseball draft in 2003.  He enjoyed a successful 11-year Minor League career.   In 2005, he was the Mets Organizational Player of the Month in July.  In 2008, he was Can Am League Player of the Month in July.  In 2009, he had a 28 game hitting streak, made the All-Star Team and earned the Northern League Defensive Player of the Year.   In September of 2010 he earned Northern League Player of the Month. 

After retiring for competitive baseball, Kevin become an elite instructor.  He works with Little Leaguers, travel players of all ages and coaches for Hinsdale Central.  Kevin was a prominent figure with the Red Dogs last year and teaches hitting, fielding and agility.  Kevin is all about getting the fundamentals right and having a blast while doing it.

Kevin will also Manage the Red Dogs 13U White Team this year.


Brent Kittel

Brent Kittel is the current Westmont High School Varsity Assistant coach. Coach Kittel has been coaching for over 25 years and was one of the first private baseball instructors in the Chicagoland area. In addition to his high school and private lesson experience he has coached travel baseball with such organizations as Illinois Ice, Team Demarini and The Oak Brook Outlaws. Coach Kittel has taken teams abroad as part of both USA Baseball and America’s Team.

Coach Kittel grew up in Westmont and attended Downers Grove North High School. He played collegiately at Illinois State University for the legendary Duffy Bass. Undrafted, Coach Kittel pursued his dream by playing International Club Baseball in Italy, Australia and Germany. Here in the States he played semi professionally with the San Diego Stars. As a two way player(infield and pitcher) Coach Kittel specializes in pitching, hitting fielding and baserunning. Known as a superb bunter and a sure handed fielder, his greatest attribute was being a superb student of the game.

Coach Kittel is a sixth grade teacher at Wilkins Elementary School in Justice,Il and is active in animal adoption. “Because of my experience as both a teacher and a coach I feel that I am well suited to help your child with both academics and athletics. Life is about balance. My goal is to instill that philosophy with my students.”
