WHY BOX LACROSSE?
- REPETITIONS – Players get more touches throughout the course of a practice or a game. How many times have you gone to your son’s outdoor games and seen him barely touch the ball? That is not the case in box. There are only five players per team (plus goalie) and there are walls keeping the ball in play. Everyone gets a lot of reps catching, throwing and scooping the ball.
- ACCURACY – Players learn how to shoot with accuracy. Too many young players in outdoor lacrosse try to shoot too hard and end up missing the goal. With a smaller goal and a big padded-up goalie in box, players have to learn to shoot accurately and quickly.
- TOUGHNESS – The box game develops physical and mental toughness. The box game is a little more physical because it is in tighter quarters. The close confines teaches players to have poise with the ball, run through checks, handle defensive pressure, and stay calm in traffic. These are huge assets for a lacrosse player as he develops.
Patriot Lacrosse continues to see the importance of Box Lacrosse as a training tool. We have expanded our programs offerings to include the following:
“When you watch Canadian kids (Box Lacrosse Players) score, when you see their skill level around the cage, you wonder to your self, Jeez, are we teaching kids (in the U.S.) the wrong things?”
Coach Dom Starsia,
University of Virginia
“I believe that box lacrosse gives young people many more opportunities to excel in our game. If I had my choice, I would have every player under the age of twelve play box lacrosse exclusively or at least the majority of the time.”
Coach Bill Tierney
US Lacrosse Hall of Fame
