General Background. Coach Drayton began his coaching career in 2000, as a volunteer assistant boys coach at Jefferson Middle School in Arlington, Virginia, where he coached for three years.

Coach Drayton then accepted the Freshmen Girls’ Basketball head coaching position at his alma mater, Wakefield High School, under then varsity head coach, Marcus McKinney, the current coordinator of the Matrix High School program. After coaching the Freshmen team, he was then promoted to the head JV girls’ coach at Wakefield. 

After two years as the Freshmen and JV coach, Coach Drayton became the Varsity Girls’ Basketball head coach at Wakefield, where he led the Warriors to two Regional Tournament births.  In 2006, he was named Coach of the Year by the Arlington Sun Gazette Newspaper.

After three years of coaching the Warriors’ varsity team, he stepped down to spend more time with his newborn daughter, Joniah.

Currently, Coach Drayton is in his second year as the head Varsity Assistant Coach for the Yorktown High School Girls’ Basketball team in Arlington, Virginia. 

During his time at Wakefield, Coach Drayton also coached AAU with the Arlington Pride, as an Assistant coach for one year and Head Coach for three years in the 13U-16U (8th Grade to 11th Grade) age groups.   His 13U and 14U teams each qualified for Nationals.   Coach Drayton is excited to be back coaching AAU with the Matrix.

Coaching Philosophy: Coach Drayton's coaching philosophy focuses on the fundamentals of the game.  He is passionate and encourages his players to work hard, play together, and play for each other.  This promotes team loyalty, cooperation, fair play, dedication and self-discipline through team play.

Personal Background:  A native of Arlington, Virginia, Coach Drayton attended Arlington Public Schools and graduated from Wakefield High School in 1994. He received his Bachelors Degree in 1999 from Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia. 

Employed at Kenmore Middle School in Arlington, Virginia, Coach Drayton enjoys watching his favorite NFL team, the Washington Redskins, cooking, spending time with his family and playing basketball.
