Required Equipment and Uniforms

All New Canaan Winter Club travel hockey players wear RED helmets, gloves and pants. Please purchase the appropriate colors.Team socks can be purchased at Blueline Sports in the Darien Rink.

Neckguards are RECOMMENDED for all players.

Mouthguards are mandatory at the Peewee level and above.

Mouthguards are recommended, but not mandatory, at the Mite and Squirt levels. Please check your child's skates and make sure that he/she has the best fit possible...not too big and not to small.

Tie your child's skates as tightly as possible.  By the time your skater is a Squirt-level hockey player, he/she should be tying their own skates.

Remember to have skates sharpened several times or more during the season. Five hours use is a good rule of thumb, possibly more often if pond skating.  It is always a good idea to carry an extra towel and wipe your blades after each use.  Why?  Blades get dull and will eventually rust, especially when you don’t wipe them.

Please buy the highest quality, name brand helmets made specifically for ice hockey.  Lacrosse helmets are not permitted for use in ice hockey; they do not provide sufficient protection at the back of the head in the event of backward falls.  Bauer and some others make helmets that are easy to adjust.  These are particularly useful in very cold weather, as you can put a thin lycra ski cap on your player and put the helmet on top, with easy helmet adjustment.  There are usually spare parts for hockey helmets located in a bin, to your left as you enter the NCWC office.

Kids hate putting on wet clothes.  Please make sure your skat
er's equipment is spread out to dry after use.  If stuffed in to a hockey bag and left there, they will not dry!

Full Hockey equipment is required for tryouts and evaluations, including house league. A helmet with a face shield or cage is mandatory. Lacrosse helmets are not allowed.  Hockey socks or sweatpants should cover all shin pads.

When dressing for hockey at the Winter Club, you must use the dressing rooms, please do not dress in the main clubhouse.  Whether dressing for hockey or not, you must always keep the pathways clear in the main clubhouse.

*Helmets are mandatory for coaches during practices.*

CHC - USA Hockey Coaches Helmet Rule

ALL coaches MUST be wearing helmets on the ice during all practices.  This includes house and travel teams, as well as clinics. The rule is simple and does require 100% compliance by all CHC member programs and their coaches.   The rule is as follows.  A “modern” helmet must be used at all times when a coach is on the ice.  Enforcement is made through the punishment for each offense: 1st infraction = Warning; 2nd infraction = 1-game suspension; 3rd infraction = Match penalty.  Sanctions may also be imposed upon the program for wanton disregard of this rule.  This is USA Hockey Policy, CHC Policy and Winter Club HPC policy.  There will be no exceptions, regardless of when, where and how our practices are conducted.
