Pre-Referee Training – younger than 14 years old

DYSA will hold annual new, or pre-referee training in August.  This is for referees younger than 14 years old who are interested in assistant refereeing.  At age 14 and older, players must be officially certified via the Massachusetts State Referee Committee (MSRC).

This Duxbury-only course provides an introduction to referee responsibilities via a combination of classroom discussion and field examples.  Upon completion, these referees will be eligible to act as Assistant Referees (AR/lineperson) during In-Town games only (not Coastal or NLS league games).

Referee Training – 14 years or older

Certification and re-certification courses are held throughout the year, primarily over the summer and in the late fall/early winter. For more information and to register for these courses, please contact Massachusetts State Referee Committee at http://www.massref.net.

Grade 8 Referees

Grade 8 is the entry level for new referees aged 14 and older. Once certified, these referees can expect to be working competitive or recreational games in Youth or Adult Leagues and Tournaments depending on the age of the referee.

Take the Grade 8 ("grade" refers to referee certification, not school age) course if:

·         You are at least 14 years old.

·         You wish to Head/Center Ref U12 games and above.

·         You want to referee U10 and/or U12 assistant referee only.

·         You wish to referee full-sided (11 players a side) soccer

·         You want to referee competitive players. That means that you want to referee the higher skilled players, those that have been selected to play for their town, and who will play in games against other towns.

Take the Grade 8 Re-certification course if:

·         You currently hold a Grade 8 certification and need to re-certify (all referees must re-certify annually)

·         You have been a Grade 9 Referee (note Grade 9 is no longer offered in Massachusetts) for at least 1 year and your age plus your years of experience adds to exactly 16 or more.

·         You have been a Grade 8 referee in the past five years, but let your registration lapse

Referee assignments are made thru Game Officials website - http://www.GameOfficials.net

Referee Rates – Coastal League

DYSA has recently increased its pay rate for all levels of referees who work in the Coastal League.  Please note, Northeast Soccer League rates and assignments are maintained by that League, not DYSA.  In-Town rates for Assistant Referees will generally follow the rates for Coastal, but may change slightly depending on the experience of the referee.
