US Lacrosse Boys Officials Training
Presented by the UMLOA
The Upper Midwest Lacrosse Officials Association will conduct additional US Lacrosse Level 1 and Level 2 training for new officials this spring & summer. You must be at least a high school sophomore to become an official. Follow these steps:
Step 1: Choose your level
❏ You are a new official, are at least a sophomore, and wish to officiate middle school and lower games only: choose Level 1.
❏ You are a new official, will be at least a senior this fall, and wish to officiate freshman games and lower: choose Level 1 and Level 2.
❏ You are returning official, will be at least a senior this fall, and wish to officiate freshman games and lower: choose Level 2.
❏ You are a returning official and wish to officiate middle school and lower games only: choose either Level 1 or Level 2.
❏ You are an adult and wish to officiate high school games: choose Level 1 and Level 2 (a free
additional one-hour training is required for doing MSHSL games)
If you did not previously pass a Level 1 course, you are considered to be a new official. Level 2 training requires prior completion of Level 1 training. We encourage all returning high school seniors to take a Level 2 course in lieu of the recert to upgrade their status and knowledge; this will also allow them to officiate the many available 9/10 games.

Fees for Level 1 and 2 include the NFHS Rules Book, the US Lacrosse Level 1 and 2 Training Manual, classroom training, the on-field session, and—upon completion—two US Lacrosse MDOC patches.
Recert fees include all update materials; recurrent attendees must bring their rulebook and manual from previous training.
Step 5: Get proper US Lacrosse Membership:
All new and returning officials must be members of US Lacrosse with the “official” membership
classification for insurance and liability purposes. You should receive a 2008 NFHS Rule Book with your membership renewal.
❏ If you are a current USL member as an official (exp. date 9/30/08), no action is required.
❏ If you are a current USL member, but not as an official, with an expiration date after 9/30/08 contact US Lacrosse at 410.235.6882 ext. 102 or at
to change your status. There is no longer an additional fee for this. If your expiration date is before 9/30/08, contact US Lacrosse and inquire about your options.
❏ If you are not a USL member, you must join as an official: go to www.uslacrosse.org and click “Join Now.”
Step 6: Complete your classroom training
You must attend all classes within a session and pass the written test (100 true-false questions each for Level 1 and Level 2). Test answers must be e-mailed to
by 8:00 p.m. on July 3.
Bring your rulebook and manual to each class session.
Step 7: Purchase uniform and equipment
Obtain the equipment required for your level of officiating (as detailed in your training manual). For freshman and lower-level games, you’ll need two flags, a Fox-40 finger-grip whistle, an official’s hat, a belt, black shoes, official’s socks, white shorts with belt loops and pockets, a striped shirt with a collar, a tape measure, and a coin. You’ll also need a 20-second timer for all high-school level games, including freshman games.
Step 8: Complete on-field training
At least one on-field session is required for all new Level 1 and Level 2 officials; it is optional, but encouraged, for returning officials. This gives you actual field experience in game situations. The on-field session dates and times for the June session are TBA. Only one on-field session is required but you may attend more often (encouraged!) if you wish.
Step 9: Get game assignments
The UMLOA will train anyone who is interested. While there are many games to be officiated and often too few officials, we cannot guarantee you will receive games. For the spring 7/8 and 9/10 seasons, there is a central assigner
who attempts to get everyone games. The same assigner also assigns officials for JV and varsity high school games as well as summer high-school level games. For the summer YLM season, you need to contact YLM clubs on your own to get game assignments.
