Avon Grove Wildcats Cheerleading
As part of the Wildcat’s non-profit, volunteer youth football and cheerleading organization, we take great pride in our cheerleading program. We welcome children between the ages of 5 and 14 to take part in this sport. All children will be placed on a squad to cheer for a football team; however, the coaches may be evaluating the girls ages 9 and up for placement on a Varsity squad during the first two weeks of practice to determine ability using placement criteria similar to that of the football program. The 5 & 6 year olds will cheer for the flag football team, 7 year olds will be placed on the Exhibition squad (80JV) and 8 year olds will be placed on the Competition squad (80V). The older children (ages 9 and up) will be notified at the end of August as to whether they will be placed on the JV squad (optional competition squad) or the Varsity squad (definite competition squad). To be considered a mascot, you must be less than 5 years old as of July 1st, 2010.
A significant amount of time needs to be committed to the cheerleading program. Practices will begin the first week of August and will be held every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with the exception of the flag squad which only practices twice a week (days TBD). Once school begins, the practices will move indoors (unless weather permits to be outside) and will continue to be 2-3 times per week. We will cheer at Wildcat football games on Saturday or Sunday throughout every weekend during the season and possibly into November during playoffs. Our home field is Harmony Park in West Grove but we also travel to play teams as close as Kennett Square and as far away as Norchester.
We proudly wear our colors of maroon, gold and white during practices and games. A game uniform consists of a shell, skirt, pants and jacket and will be provided to every girl as part of the registration fee. These uniforms will be handed back in at the end of the season. As with any sport, the girls will need to purchase the appropriate shoes, socks, bodysuit, and other accessories (the total cost for these items are usually under $100). Practice uniforms consist of burgundy or gold shorts and a plain white short sleeved t-shirt. NO camisoles or tank tops are to be worn in place of the t-shirt. Please plan on purchasing the shorts early as they become harder to find in the summer.
For safety precautions, the girls will not be allowed to wear jewelry of any kind. Please refrain from having your daughter’s ears pierced prior to the start of the season. She will be expected to remove the earrings for practice and games. Also, no gum chewing, nails must be trimmed short (no acrylics) and hair must be pulled up/back into a ponytail off of the face. Please bring a water bottle with your child’s name on it and a towel to sit on in the grass for stretching.
In addition to cheering at football games, the cheerleaders will participate in Homecoming festivities, end of the year parties and possibly the Bert Bell Cheerleading Competition. Our cheerleading teams have ended their seasons with strong friendships and a lot of pride in their accomplishments.
None of this would be possible without the time and support offered by the parents. Your role is important, not only to the support of your daughter/son, but also to the Wildcats organization. As a parent of a Wildcat, you will be required to help with field set-up/clean-up and asked to support our annual fundraiser. If you’d like to get more involved, we could always use another helping hand!
This year, wildcat cheerleading registrations will close on June 30th. Absolutely NO registrations will be taken after June 30th. If you are a new cheerleader or your photo ID is 4 years old, you will be required to get a new photo ID. If you are new to our organization, you will need to show your original birth certificate or passport to get your photo ID. Your child MUST have a physical PRIOR to the start of the first day of practice in August or she/he will not practice! Please make your physical appointment early! No exceptions will be made. The physical form must be signed by a physician and be less than 6 months old for the organization to accept it.
