John Davis
13U/8th Grade Black Team

Background.  Coach Davis moved to the Washington, DC area from North Carolina where he attended NC State University.  He now lives in Falls Church, Virginia with his wife Patricia.  They have four children, who all grew up in the Arlington Youth Sports environment: soccer, football, lacrosse, softball and of course, basketball.  This has allowed him, over many years, to come to know and befriend many in the Arlington sports community. One of the children is still college age and attending George Mason University. Eric, Rachel, Colin and Stephanie round out the Davis family. John owns and operates a home improvement company in Northern Virginia.

Coaching Experience.  Currently, John is the head JV Girls’ coach at Bishop O’Connell High School in North Arlington. This is his 5th year coaching at O’Connell. Much of the off season finds John involved in summer leagues, coaching clinics and player development for all levels at DJO.   He works very closely with the Varsity program as well.

While away from the AAU scene for 2 years, he previously spent many years there.  His experience includes 3 seasons with BRYC boys AAU at the U12, U13 and U14 levels National teams. Prior to BRYC, John coached 3 seasons with the Vogues AAU Girls’ program at the U11, U12, and U13 levels. Three seasons were also spent with the Cardinals AAU regional teams at the U11, U12 and U13 levels.

Other coaching experience includes several seasons at the Arlington Travel Boys, Arlington Youth basketball and Saturday morning leagues. Lastly, John coached CYO basketball for St. Thomas More Parish in Arlington, Virginia at all levels for 10 seasons. So you may be looking at one of the ultimate gym rats!

Drew Edmundson, an assistant varsity coach at Bishop O'Connell, will serve as Coach Davis' assistant coach for the Matrix 13U Black team.

Coaching Philosophy.  Basketball reflects life! Youth coaches should lead by example; reinforcing hard work, determination, confidence, patience, and enthusiasm. In life, as in basketball, what you accomplish is directly related to what you put in. Speaking as a high school coach, it makes the job at the high school level so much easier if girls come to us with proper fundamentals.  Can’t stress it too much.
