McLean Youth Volleyball MYV provides house, select and travel volleyball programs for Elementary School, Middle School, and High School athletes in the greater McLean Virginia VA area including Great Falls, Falls Church, Arlington, Vienna, Fairfax, Reston
For the spring 2019 season, MYV is introducting two new competitive "HS Select" leagues to complement the existing HS Travel and HS House leagues.
HS- Select A (HSS-A): A new advanced league for players who want to have a competitive volleyball experience without the HS Travel commitment. Similar to adult leagues, it follows a BYOT (Bring Your Own Team) and BYOC (Bring Your Own Coach) format where a group of friends registers as a team and identifies their own adult coach(es), if the team wants a coach. The commitment is one 90-minute practice during the week (also optional) and one 60 or 90-minute match on Saturdays or Sundays. The league follows standard HS volleyball rules without special exceptions. Limit of 6 teams.
HS-Select B (HSS-B): This new league also follows a BYOT and BYOC format but is not Coach Optional. A group of friends registers as a team and identifies their own adult coach(es). It is intended for players with intermediate or higher skills who want a competitive but casual experience. The commitment is one 90-minute practice during the week and one 60 or 90-minute match on Saturdays or Sundays. The league follows standard HS volleyball rules without special exceptions. Limit of 6 teams.
What is BYOT? – Bring Your Own Team
Similar to adult volleyball leagues, BYOT means a group playing HS Select sign up as a complete team – could be friends, classmates, former teammates, etc.
The team must commit to fielding enough girls to play throughout the season – see below for guidelines on substitutes, forfeits and bye-weeks
The team self-identifies as interested in the “A” level (advanced) or “B” level (intermediate+)
What is BYOC? – Bring Your Own Coach
Each HS Select team identifies its own adult coach(es) -- could be a parent, former coach, etc.
HSS-A is "Coach Optional" if the team prefers
A new option was just added. You can now sign up to play HS Select A or B as a SINGLE or SMALL GROUP OF FRIENDS. To do so, either send us a note at
or fill out the new question about league-formed teams on your 9th-12th grade registration form.
Practices and Matches
During registration, HS Select teams identify a day of week for a 90-minute that works for the entire group
HSS-A is "Practice Optional" if the team prefers
HS Select matches are on Saturdays or Sundays for 60 or 90-minutes following standard HS volleyball rules including unlimited service wins and positional substitution. However, continuous substitution is permitted if the team prefers.
The deadline for registering a HS Select team is March 13.
Girls planning to play HS Select must first register as an individual with either MYA Volleyball or VYI Volleyball and pay the league fee. Note, there is no extra charge for HS Select.
The group then submits a separate team registration including a roster of 8 to 12 girls. Only registered girls can be added to a team roster.
HSS-A teams can include 2 girls actively playing club volleyball or HS Travel during the spring season. HSS-B cannot include active club or HS Travel players.
During team registration, teams also identify a team name, two captains, adult coach(es), the level of play, a preferred practice day and proposed bye-weeks (up to 2). Coaches and practices are optional for HSS-A teams
Singles or small groups interested in playing HSS-A or HSS-B can join waitlist made available to team captains
League commissioners may invite teams to switch leagues to keep the level of play even and balanced.
Forfeits, Substitutions, and Bye-Weeks
Forfeits: Teams must have a minimum of 5 players per match. Less than 5 players could lead to a match forfeit.
Substitutions: To avoid a possible forfeit, teams captains are allowed to bring in subs not on their roster. The sub must already be registered in the MYV or VYV and can come from any MYV or VYV team from any league. However, no substitutes are permitted during playoffs.
Bye-Weeks: To avoid a possible forfeit, teams can select 1 or 2 bye-weeks during the season (for beach weekend, prom, graduation activities, etc.) where they won’t be scheduled to play a match. These dates must be identified by the team registration deadline of March 15.
If a team forfeits more than one time, it will not be permitted to participate in playoffs
