Referee training for the 2021-2022 BBL winter season will be held in early November. Each candidate must attend a basketball rules training session and participate in floor training by reffing pre-season scrimmages. Candidates must also attend a pre-season meeting to review division specific rules and game day expectations.
Certified referees will be scheduled for two or more recreation league games each Saturday during the winter season. Referees are paid $12-$15 per game, depending on tenure, for winter league games. Freshman are welcome to participate in the winter training program, however, they will not be scheduled for winter season games. They will qualify themselves for the 2023 summer program referee positions.
Being a referee is not for everyone. A candidate must have the following qualities: exude confidence, be a good and vocal communicator, be consistent, know the rules, and use common sense. The quality of the recreation league game experience is greatly affected by the quality of the referees. The referee is there for the safety of the players, fairness of the game, and to assist the coaches in having the recreational player learn the correct way to play the game, all while maintaining a fun environment. To balance these objectives a certain level of maturity is looked for in each candidate.
Candidates may enroll in training when they sign up to play in the boys or girls biddy program. If a candidate is not going to participate in the biddy program but wishes to be notified of the referee training dates they should email email@example.com to be enrolled.
