NIHA in the National Spotlight
by posted 10/09/2009

Please turn to page 28 in this month's USA Hockey Magazine (Oct '09) and notice the dapper gentleman in the top right story.  NIHA's own Dave Mead has been named the Liberty Mutual Responsible Sports VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH!

There is none more deserving than Dave.  I can personally attest to the fact that he works extremely hard to keep the kids playing hockey, your kids.  Please take note of his photo and the next time you see him at the rink let him know how much you appreciate his work.  Better yet, let him know what you can help him with.

THANKS DAVE!

Varsity Generals
NEWARK GENERALS 3, PRPC PROWLERS 1: The Generals raced out to a 2-0 lead, and Keenan McCloud’s empty-net goal with 58 seconds left wrapped up Newark’s first Blue Jackets Cup championship Sunday at the Chiller North.

Newark (27-5-4), who also beat PRPC 4-3 in overtime Saturday to clinch a berth in the championship game, also won the regular-season title.

Nick Kohl and Sol Parini added goals for the Generals. Clay Beckholt, Zach Prouty, Drew Link and Joe Parini all had 1 assist.

Newark fired 28 shots on net, killed 2 penalties and goalie Andrew Clark made 11 saves.

The Generals are off until the state tournament, which starts March 6 in Columbus. Newark will be the No. 1 seed from the Columbus region.

This completed a CBJ Cup sweep!  Newark is the first association or school since the Cup's induction to win both the JV and the Varsity Cup in the same year!

Squirt Selects Win Tourney in Pittsburgh
by posted 02/20/2009

The Newark Squirt Select team won the championship game in the Pittsburgh Three Rivers Cup tournament Feb. 16. The team gave up two goals in five games. Members of the team are Dustin Tolley, Griffin Hayden, Jordan Painter, Will Danby, Luke Stewart, Alex Strouse, Danielle Bunting, Troy Peek, Nathan Mork, Josh Hogg, Adam Trebb, Patrick Chaykowski, Shea Goss and David Haines. Coaches are assistant Steve Hogg, head coach Jeff Danby and assistant Tracy Haines.

The Newark Squirts recently assembled fourteen players from both house teams to create an All-Star “Squirt Generals” travel team.  Their first game played together was on February 14th, 2009 in a Squirt-B tournament bracket at the start of the Three Rivers Cup series in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  The Squirt Generals blew out their opposition 7 to 0 in that game and proceeded to roll through three more opponents before reaching the Championship on Monday afternoon, February 16th.  There, they defeated the Mon Valley Thunder 7 to 1 to take their division, along with gold medal prizes and a large silver trophy.

In the five tournament games played, the Squirt Generals outscored their opponents 30 to 2.  Dustin Tolley, goalie, accepted the MVP award given out collectively to a stifling Newark defense anchored with him in net and protected by defensemen Jordan Painter, Josh Hogg, David Haines, and Nathan Mork.  Top scorers included:  Patrick Chaykowski with 10 goals and 5 assists, Griffin Hayden with 5 goals and 3 assists, Luke Stewart with 4 goals and 3 assists, Troy Peek with 4 goals and 1 assist, and Will Danby with 2 goals and 3 assists.   Other players making key contributions included: Danielle Bunting, Shea Goss, Alex Strouse, and Adam Trebb.

The undefeated Newark Squirt Generals are looking forward to playing at home in the McCarthy Cup this coming weekend (February 27th through March 1st), where they hope to repeat their successful formula built around team play, quick line-changes, aggressive back checking and speedy counterattacks.

The Squirt All-Stars are coached by Jeff Danby, Steve Heist, and Tracy Haines.  Steve Hogg also helps with the bench management.   Luke Stewart is the team captain, and Jordan Painter is the assistant captain.
