TOPSoccer Program Celebrating 10 Years!

There were smiles, giggles and cheering on Saturday for the long awaited game against the GHS Varsity Boys team.  The TOPSoccer players and peer mentors were pumped and quickly positioned on the field for the game.  Families lined the sidelines and were quick to erupt with applause for each goal the TOPSoccer players notched against the spirited GHS boys soccer team.  Emotions were high and the love of soccer and team was evident everywhere you turned.  It was a great day at Rotary Fields for soccer and a reflection of the great program celebrating its 10 years !

The Outreach Program for Soccer, better known as TOPSoccer, is a Hartwell soccer program designed to bring the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to children from kindergarten through high school with developmental disabilities.  The TOPSoccer program enables these special athletes to play at levels consistent with their skills, not necessarily their age. Volunteer coaches lead players and peer mentors in fun-filled and informative sessions of soccer skill-building and small-sided games.  Soccer games are on Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. at Rotary Fields.  We meet for 6 – 8 weeks in the fall, starting in early September and again in the spring, starting in late April.

The Hartwell TOPSoccer League is celebrating its 10-year anniversary in 2014!  The team has played for 20 straight seasons thanks to the incredible support of Hartwell, generous volunteer coaches, peer mentors and the many loyal families who continue to come back season after season.  TOPSoccer provides an invaluable opportunity for children to play soccer who might not otherwise have the chance.

BU11 Tribute & Recognition for Breast Cancer Awareness

The Boys U11 Blue Team organized a nice tribute in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.  Kane Mazur had an idea and his team mates agreed .... it would be great to wear pink socks in support of of Breast Cancer Awareness Month!  The boys sported the socks against a game versus West Hartford at Riverfront.  Great idea Kane and thanks to the Boys U11 Blue team for showing this level of support!

October 20th: Teen Awareness Event
Monday October 20th 2014
Glastonbury High School Auditorium
7:30pm

Our Teens:
How to Let Them Go Without Losing Them
The Glastonbury Alcohol and Drug Council (GLAD) in conjunction with the Glastonbury Education Foundation (GEF) is hosting an event to raise awareness as a community on preventing destructive behavior among teens.
Understanding the consequences and dangers involved with binge drinking, making safe alternative choices to risky behavior, alcohol awareness for parents, and what parents need to know about underage drinking will be discussed at the event. National speakers Kathi Sullivan, who tragically lost her teenage daughter, and former professional football player Chris Sullivan, will be talking to parents and teens about experiences with risky behavior and how you, a community member, can start today to make a difference tomorrow.
The event will be hosted on October 20th, 2014 at 7:30pm in the Glastonbury High School Auditorium. In order to make Glastonbury a safer and drug free community, we invite parents to attend with your Middle school-high school-aged child(ren).  Parents, please encourage your children and friends to join. This presentation is intended for teens and their parents to experience together. For more information please contact Emily Dickinson, Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator, at 860-652-7531 or emily.dickinson@glastonbury-ct.gov
This project is supported by a grant from the Glastonbury Education Foundation.

Hartwell donates to GHS Varsity Teams

Partnerships within Glastonbury Soccer Community Strengthens

The Glastonbury Hartwell Soccer Club presented the GHS Girl's Varsity Soccer team with a $1500 donation after a varsity game on September 9th.  The donation represents the continued partnership within the soccer community.  The Glastonbury Hartwell Girls U11 Premier team enjoyed being ball girls for the Varsity game and having a positive interaction with the team.  For these aspiring young soccer players, an afternoon with the Varsity team is a memorable event.  High-fiving players, seeing a competitive high school game and just basking in the high school sports environment motivates them in many ways.  Throughout the year the teams and club unite to support community events including soccer camps, volunteer time at the Apple Festival and TOPS and Recreation events.
