Matrix 2016 Green Earns Gold Medal -- FIRST in Matrix History

The Matrix Green 2017 6th grade team continued their dominance in the Potomac Valley District Division II Tournament on their way to the first ever gold medal for the Matrix organization.

After emerging undefeated and the #1 team out of pool play, the Matrix entered a very tough medal round draw for the weekend.  In their first game, the Matrix defeated the Maryland Flames 45-23.  Constant defensive pressure and excellent ball movement were key to overcoming a bit of nervous exhaustion to pull away for the decisive win.

In the semi-finals, the Matrix faced a well-coached and highly disciplined Lady Hoopsters, but they were no match for the stifling press of the Matrix.  Time after time, the Matrix swarmed in unison creating turnovers that quickly converted into baskets, and ultimately a 53-30 victory.

In the Championship game, the Matrix faced familiar foes in the VA Hurricanes.  Both teams were weary from a long weekend of basketball in hot gyms, but some outstanding outside shooting and the girls digging deep to beat the opponents down the court often for easy baskets led to a decisive 47-21 victory.

In what proved to be a very well run and well officiated tournament, the Matrix Green 2017 girls proudly donned their Gold medals after their final victory.  It was a weekend of hard work, great team play and a lot of fun….and the girls surely slept well Sunday night

2017 Green Takes Silver Over Many D-I Team at BRYC Tourney

I would just like to take a second to recap this weekend’s results:

  1. 47-26 win over 5th grade Vogues team (the leading contender for D1 gold in the 5th Grade DQT)
  2. 38-18 win over VA Hurricanes D1 team --- held them to 6 points in the first half
  3. 42-21 win over Classics
  4. 26-16 win over Mustangs --- probably the smartest game we played all weekend.
  5. 34-40 loss in the tournament Championship ---  just about as much as those 8 girls could give in 28 minutes against a team that eliminated other tough D1 teams along the way

This is what the spring AAU season is all about.  I could not be more proud of the effort everyone put forward this weekend.  The team played stellar defense, offensive passing was like we were together for a year, and guts were unmatched.

I got many extremely positive comments about the team, how hard they played and what good sports they were all weekend ---- people were asking for re-matches so they could get good games.    Thanks to everyone for their effort this weekend, and please allow the kids to enjoy a well deserved week off.
