Welcome to Herndon Youth Travel Basketball
Our Travel teams play in the Fairfax County Youth Basketball League (FCYBL, http://www.fcybl.org/), which is a highly competitive league. Games are normally played throughout Fairfax County and occasionally in Loudoun County schools. All girls aged 10-14 and boys aged 10-18 (ages determined as of October 1, 2009) are eligible to play provided they are not participating on a high school basketball team. Players must be residents of Fairfax County, with zip codes 20170, 20171, and 20194.
Herndon Optimist Travel Basketball players are physically fit, enthusiastic, have fun, are good "sports”, know the game of basketball, increase their individual basketball skills and concentrate on "total team play."
Player development is our priority. Although we will inform each player to concentrate on a primary and secondary position, we don't train specific positions--we train basketball players. The long-range goal is to develop each player into a versatile athlete who has the skill and knowledge to play basketball at a high level of competition. This requires creating a program of skill acquisition based on developing specific skills, learning when and how to use a skill, making decisions on the court, combining skills with players on the team for effective team strategies, making transitions, and maintaining team focus.
