Welcome to the Beltway Box Lacrosse League
The Mission of the Beltway Box Lacrosse League is to provide an additional, high-quality off-season lacrosse opportunity for players' skill, knowledge and fitness development in a fun and exciting format using a hybrid of modified field and box lacrosse rules (no boarding, cross checking or take out checks).  The program is designed to bring players into the action of box lacrosse -- to keep the players having fun, learning the game and motivated to play more. The "box" is conveniently located behind the Francis C. Hammond Middle School in Alexandria, just off I-395, east on Seminary Road.  To join the mailing list or register for a current program, please click Register Online on the left of the screen.

Honor the game.  Think outside the box -- play in it!

WINTER BOX LACROSSE 2009-10
by posted 11/15/2009

Winter Box Lacrosse:  Beltway Box Lacrosse is registering for winter box lacrosse for players to prepare for the spring school and NVYLL seasons. Games will be played at the lighted, outdoor Seminary Road Rink in Alexandria, just  a few exits north of the Springfield mixing bowl on the Beltway.

Divisions:

High School

U-13/U-11/U-9 1997/98 and later birthdays

Youth division is based on a player's January 1, 2010 age used for NVYLL spring 2010 season eligibility.

A seven game winter season will run weekends beginning January 9 through the expected typical "try out commencement date" of February 22.  Sessions will be Saturdays, with strong preference for morning scheduling (Friday nights until 8:30 p.m. as make up scheduling needs require, with President's Day weekend as a possible make up).  We will try not to schedule play when temperatures are expected to be below 40 degrees F.  Registration is now $55 for remainder of the season.  Goalies playing box goalie are free because of variations in the game.  Register by clicking the Register Online tab on the left of the screen and completing the registration information.

Teams can be grouped together but registration is individual.  Players will be grouped by school, travel, and/or NVYLL club team affiliation to the extent possible, consistent with competitive play.  Quality coaching with coaches having years of college playing and coaching experience will be provided.  All players must be members of US Lacrosse and must use a US Lacrosse number to register.  The US Lacrosse membership is $35 and $25 for student and youth players respectively.

Rules will be hybrid box/field rules with no boarding, cross-checking and/or take out body checks. The program and schedule may be modified in the discretion of the League Director and/or as warranted by registration levels and other factors, including weather.  If there are special player circumstances, including financial hardship with fees and equipment, please contact the League Director or 703-568-2864).  We want all players to have a chance to play.  Our goal is to continue providing an affordable, fun, quality off-season lacrosse program close to home, minimizing drive time and providing increased playing time with a goal of teams of 15 to 18 players.  In addition to games, we anticipate that there will be opportunities for additional scrimmages and practices in the box, as has been the case with the Fall Ball season. When insufficient registered players are in a division, a clinic/practice format will be used.

Why Play Box? Why Beltway Box Lacrosse League?
by posted 09/06/2009

Box lacrosse is great for improving skill and fitness for the spring season and competitive tournament play.  Box lacrosse, or Boxla as they call it in Canada, is an alternative version of the game of lacrosse that complements the field game.  College and professional teams are loading up with Canadian talent trained "in the box" -- think current and former NCAA players: Syracuse's Gary and Paul Gait, Tom Marechek, Stephen Keogh, Cody Jamieson, Sid Smith; Delaware's John Grant, Jr.; Georgetown's Brodie Merrill; Massachusetts' Jeff Zywicki; and Zach Greer of Duke/Bryant, to name a few of the best.  Of the top 6 goal scorers in NCAA Div. I history, 5 are Canadian box players.  Many have gone on to "all world" careers as professionals and were part of a Canadian national team that beat one of the strongest teams the US has ever put together in the last world championships.  Why?  No doubt a lot talent and developmental training in box lacrosse.  (See www.3dlax.com and InsideLacrosse.com August and September 2009).  Now many top US players spend a summer or two in Canada or Upstate New York during their college careers to learn box skills and give their field game a tune up.

What's the deal?  Box lacrosse is played in the confined space of a hockey rink floor or a fenced-in dirt and grass "box" -- there is no place to hide and little space to operate with the ball.  Thus, stick skills and quick passing are the keys to offense, with pick and rolls, screens, fakes, stick protection, catching in traffic and down field transition play, all subject to a 30-second shot clock.  Everyone but the goalie plays offense and defense with short sticks  All players touch the ball many more times and have to play defense relying on good footwork, positioning, and proper angles to defend the goal -- no waiting or camping out on your half of the field and no hacking with a long pole.  Practicing and playing using box skills will make a better field lacrosse player.

The Beltway Box Lacrosse League is intended to bring the opportunity for box lacrosse (using hybrid field/box lacrosse rules) to young players in the inner suburbs, with quality coaching for added skill development opportunity and a lot of fun in the mix.  Excellent programs exist across the Washington-Baltimore area for off season field lacrosse league play, training and tournament teams.  Players are encouraged to keep up with those and do more.  But a realistic opportunity for off season box lacrosse play has virtually been non-existent for players in the inner suburbs.  In other parts of the country, box lacrosse for young players is catching on.  In the Washington-Baltimore area, the serious, excellent box lacrosse programs are far outside the Capital Beltway and require lengthy drives for many players and their families to the indoor facilities where the games are played.  Thus, the Beltway Box Lacrosse League brings the game closer to home for many players, cutting drive time and facilitating more frequent play.  Less time in the car means more time for families, school work and sports, including off season lacrosse.  The Beltway Box Lacrosse League is intended to keep the game affordable, motivating and fun, with music to keep play rocking, sometimes under the lights, at the outdoor rink.
