posted 02/08/2010 Given the recent developments at Prince William and the decision at Ashburn Ice House (which is closed until their roof can be inspected) some Raider families have questioned whether there are any issues with the facility at SkateQuest.
We have contacted the management at SkateQuest and have been assured that they have inspected the structure on Saturday and on Sunday. The building is sound and they will continue to monitor the situation in light of additional storms said to be projected for later this week.

posted 02/08/2010 As many have heard through the hockey grapevine or have seen on the news... the ice rink in Prince William was a casualty of the recent snow storm.
Fortunately no one was injured when the structure collapsed but unfortunately the building is apparently a total loss.
Our thoughts go our to our the extended hockey family at Prince William and the Raiders are looking at some ways to try and assist the PWHC in this time of need.

| | | | by C. Kelly posted 02/04/2010 TOURNAMENT WEEKEND VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR USA HOCKEY NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
As you know, this spring, the Reston Raiders play host to the 2010 USA Hockey National Championships for the Pee Wee (U12) Tier II (AA) division. The tournament will last five days from Wednesday, April 7 through Sunday, April 11, 2010 with all games played at SkateQuest Reston and the Ashburn Ice House.
The tournament management team seeks volunteers to provide the following services at both rinks. These services are needed ONLY during the days of the tournament, and in some cases, only during the first couple days.
The following positions are available:
Greeters
Volunteers are needed to greet the teams as they arrive at SkateQuest Reston and the Ashburn Ice House for their first tournament game at each respective rink. This will consist of Wednesday, April 7 and Thursday, April 8 only. These greeters will help teams register, find their way to their respective locker rooms, arrive on time – and in the right location – for their team photos and more. 4 Volunteers, Wed. & Thurs. only.
Registration Table
Volunteers needed to help team managers when they check-in prior to their first tournament game. As half the teams will play their first game at Ashburn while the other half compete at Reston, this service will be needed at both rinks on the first day of the tournament only. 2-4 Volunteers, Wed. only
Merchandise
The tournament will staff and manage a USA Hockey merchandise booth during all open tournament hours at both arenas. The tournament needs volunteers to help staff the booths and sell official tournament merchandise and keep an accurate inventory of items sold throughout the tournament. 2-4 Volunteers needed, Wed. through Sun.
Information Desk
Requires an individual who is in the know about not only the tournament, but the Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. region as well. We will staff this information table at both rinks on the first two days of the tournament only, Wednesday, April 7 and Thursday, April 8, to help players, coaches, families, sponsors and USA Hockey officials navigate the action. By Day #3, there should be no more further questions that cannot be addressed by either rink personnel or Tournament officials. 2-4 Volunteers needed, Wed. and Thurs.
Hospitality Coordinator
Help maintaining the hospitality room, which is open to USA Hockey officials, referees, sponsors, tournament staff, tournament volunteers, coaches and team managers (only!) from the 48 competing teams. Duties include ensuring food and drink are constantly replenished. 4 volunteers needed (rotating), Wed. through Sun.
PA Announcer
Think you’re ready to replace Wes Johnson at Verizon Center? Here’s your chance. We need announcers for each game. Knowledge of hockey required and some announcing experience preferred, but we’ll work with you. 4-8 volunteers needed each day Wed. through Sat., 4 needed Sun.
Scorekeeper
Requires reasonable hockey knowledge in scoring, penalties, and scoreboard operation. If you’re a hockey parent, chances are good you’ve already got that experience. 4-8 volunteers needed each day Wed. through Sat., 4 needed Sun.
Penalty Box Attendants
To comfort those players who have sinned on the ice, to open and close the doors and to interface with coaches to determine if players return to the ice or the players’ bench. 4-8 volunteers needed each day Wed. through Sat., 4 needed Sun.

posted 02/03/2010 Bantam Silver Battle for the Bronze!
Raiders Bantam Silver challenged themselves to a AA tournament in Lake Placid, New York, this past weekend. After a rocky start, and a short bench due to multiple injuries, the "Miracle Ice" began to work it's "magic" on the Silver Bantam Team!
Down two games, but not defeated, the Silver team took the ice at the Herb Brooks Arena, with a renewed energy. The guys had to step up and rotate through multiple positions, but they faced the challenge with a vengeance! Team work was evident as the plays began to fall into place, and multiple goals were achieved! The boys held tight through many penalty kills, and they executed great skill on the power plays. The team stayed strong on the ice, while our goalies remained rock solid in the net. A 5-0 Victory was celebrated and the tournament began to take an upward turn for the Silver Team.
Day three marked the Medal games for the teams, and it was obvious from the first drop of the puck that both teams wanted to win! The guys battled through a very physical, emotional, and intense final game. Their ability to play as a "team" was once again put to the test with multiple penalty kills and an injury, but they came out shinning. As a "team" they stepped up to the challenge, executed their plays, and over came a 2-1 deficit, winning it in the final 3 minutes 4-2! What a well deserved and fought for victory!
Our tournament MVP's were as follows, Game 1-Brian Lee, Game 2-Taylor Saffor, Game 3- Zachary Shiohama, Game 4- Patrick O'Connor.... Great job stepping up guys!
Raiders Bantam Silver Goalie Derek Guzik, chalked up an additional win for his team in the Tournament Skills Competition. Goalie Guzik held his net in the Shoot Out Competition, going 5 rounds - 3 shots each, to cinch Top-Goalie for the Raiders Silver Team.
Way to bring it home guys! Congrats to the Silver Team and their Coaching Staff!

| | | | | | | | by Chris Kelly posted 02/02/2010 Bantam Blue Heats Up in “Chilly” Lake Placid – Takes Championship
Bantam Blue won its second tournament of the season, traveling to just below the Arctic Circle in Upstate NY to take on teams from Boston, Miami and friends from across the practice rink in Reston.
Game 1 saw Blue taking on the Boston Jr. Blackhawks, a scrappy team that made every possession count. Our boys played an all-around strong match and kept the heat on the Blackhawks, winning 6-0, with 9 different players scoring or garnering assists.
Game 2 was against friends from Bantam Silver. Both teams played very well, with Silver keeping the pressure on Blue despite playing with an injury depleted bench. But in the end, Blue gave Silver the cold shoulder, winning 4-1.
Game 3 matched Blue against the Miami Toros, a team that had some tall and strong players but a short bench. The only thing colder than the weather (minus 13 degrees overnight!) was sluggish Blue’s scoring touch, and the Toros scorched Blue 2-0.
The championship game again pitted the tournament’s unbeaten Toros against Blue. Blue broke the ice early, scoring quickly in the first period. Blue kept the heat on the Toros for the entire game by playing a physical game and pressuring the puck, eventually wearing down their opponent and winning 4-0. Goalie and Ice Soldier alum Nick Lenker was named tournament MVP as he recorded a blistering hot 0.75 GAA over the 4 games.
Congratulations Bantam Blue and Coaches Fox, Hanson and Folts!

Congratulations to the Raiders U16 girls who emerged as champions of the U19 Tier I Division of the MLK Ponytail Tournament held in central Pennsylvania this past weekend.
The Raiders started off on the wrong foot, falling behind the Philadelphia Lady Patriots U19 Tier I team 5-1 after two periods, but as it would turn out the second period of their first game was the last period they would lose the whole weekend.
After that opening 5-2 loss, the Raiders had no room for error and defeated the Colorado Springs U19 entry 4-0. The final round-robin game was a match-up with the host Susquehanna Rapids U19 Tier I team. Cheered on by the "Let's go Raiders" chants of their little sisters of the U12 Raiders, the girls emerged with a 2-1 comeback victory, first place overall in the preliminary round and a spot in the championship game opposite of Colorado Springs.
The Raiders closed out the weekend with another 4-0 win and their first tournament championship as a Tier I team. Way to go girls.

SkateQuest can be reached at 703-709-1010.
* For the record, the rink rarely if ever closes so even if it is ugly... games will likely take place.
Reston Town Center ice rink games will be held if the rink is open... and again the facility rarely closes for snow. The RTC rink can be reached at 703) 709-6300.
Of course individual families can make their own determinations as to whether they feel it appropriate to get on the roads.

www.sniperskinz.com
With the holiday season in full swing, we have identified a fun gift for the hockey player(s) in your family.
Sniper Skinz is new product that just hit the market this past weekend. It is a 'sticker' application that wraps around the stick with fun patterns that can be customized to each player's liking.
To get us started, we have designed a "Reston Raiders" skin that would complement our players uniforms and identity in a fun new way.
The step-by-step process for ordering the skin is as follows:
2. Each parent/player will need to first register - do so by creating a login ID and password under "JOIN THE SNIPER SQUAD"
3. After registering, click on "MY PROFILE"
6. Click "View Organization Codes"
7. To edit the skin, click on "Copy and Edit". The skins can be customized (for example) to have each player’s name/# on the butt-end of the stick.
It is important that each purchase be made through our CODE and template in order for the Raiders PW Silver to get credit for each skin purchased and use the pre loaded artwork from the Raiders. Allow 5 business days from order placement to receipt, however, expedited shipping is available.
You can learn more about the product on the website.

- Team selections will be announced on the club website within 48 hours of the conclusion of the last ice session.
Mites
There will be one Mite travel team. The Mites will be getting more ice time than any of our programs. This provides an opportunity to maximize skill development. They will be playing in both House and Travel programs.
· All players are required to play in the house league, and will be equally dispersed among the house teams.
· They will attend 2 travel practices and 1 house practice per week.
· They are expected to play in all travel games and attend any house games that do not conflict with the travel schedule.
The player’s fees will reflect the increased ice time. The total fee for the Mite Blue team is $2250.00. This fee does not include any team assessments.
NOTE: Both Mite Development Teams will be selected in the Fall as part of our Mite House evaluation skate. The May tryouts are only for those families interested in being considered for the Mite Blue team.
Squirts
At the Squirt level the club intends to field three travel teams, dependent on the talent of players available.
· Squirt players will have two practices per week and a regular CBHL schedule of games.
The total fee for Squirts is $2100. This fee does not include any team assessments.
Pee Wees
At the Pee Wee level the club intends to field three travel teams, dependent on the talent of players available. The teams will participate in the CBHL.

· Pee Wee level hockey includes checking in the CBHL.
The total fee for Pee Wees is $2275. This fee does not include any team assessments.
Bantams

· Bantam players will have two practices per week and a regular CBHL schedule of games.
The total fee for Bantams is $2275. This fee does not include any team assessments.
Midget U16s
At the Midget U16 level the club intends to field two travel teams, dependent on the talent of players available. The teams will participate in the CBHL.
· Midget U 16 players will have two shared practices per week through the beginning of the High School season. Following the start of High School Hockey, the teams will cut back to one shared practice per week, plus one full ice practice per month. The teams will play a regular CBHL schedule of games. In addition to their two practices per week during the first two months of the season, they will receive some additional full-ice practices.
· Practices for Midgets tend to be later in the evening.
The player’s fees reflect the amount of ice time used by the teams for practice and games. The total fee for U16s is $2150. This fee does not include any team assessments
Midget U18s
At the Midget U18 level the club intends to field two travel teams, dependent on the talent of players available. The teams will participate in the CBHL.
· Midget U18 players will have two shared practices per week through the beginning of the High School season. Following the start of High School Hockey, the teams will cut back to one shared practice per week, plus one full ice practice per month. The teams will play a regular CBHL schedule of games. In addition to their two practices per week during the first two months of the season, they will receive some additional full-ice practices.

Girls U16, U14 and U12
The Raiders will expand their girls program this year and field three girls teams. The Girls U16 team will practice 2 times a week and play Tier I Level Hockey as part of the Mid-Atlantic Women’s Hockey Association (MAWHA). The player’s fees reflect the amount of ice time used by the teams for practice and games. The total fee for Girls U16 is $2275. This fee does not include any team assessments.
The Reston Raiders endeavor to field two additional Girls Travel Teams at the U12 and U14 level. While current numbers do not support fielding two teams, the final decision will be made at tryouts based on the numbers, skill and talent of players. The current expectation is to field one Girls U14 travel team that will play in the CBHL (with no requirement to play in the House league). The team fees for either team will be $2100.
If, by tryouts, there are enough travel ready U12 and travel ready U14 girls registered for and trying out for the teams, and if the Raiders can provide ice time for both teams, then the Raiders will offer travel teams at both the U12 and U14 levels. This is the same policy used for all travel teams...If there is interest and if there is enough talent and if there is ice available, then the Raiders will offer all of those teams.
Questions regarding tryouts can be directed to the Club’s Travel Director, Kevin Burch at

| | | | by c k posted 10/20/2008 RESTON RAIDERS SELECTED TO HOST
2010 U12 TIER II NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
RESTON, VA – The Reston Raiders have been selected to serve as the host club for the 2010 USA Hockey National Championships for the Pee Wee (U12) Tier II (AA) division, USA Hockey’s National Tournament Director Norm Spiegel announced last week.
Following a lengthy bid process that produced more than 30 applicants, Reston, VA was selected as one of nine sites to host the event in what will be a new championship format for USA Hockey. After several years in which qualifying league champions advanced to District Tournaments to produce 12 national championship finalists, the 2010 games have been restructured to attract up to 48 teams, essentially one champion team from each state. The format eliminates the District Tournament thus creating a “super-series national,” capable of attracting as many as 3,000 players and fans to Fairfax County, VA.
The tournament will take place April 7-11, 2010. SkateQuest Reston will serve as the host facility with overflow action taking place at the Ashburn IceHouse. Each team will play three guaranteed games.
Featured attractions include social events, a championship banquet and the Easton skills competition. The Reston’s Pee Wee AA Raiders team will receive an automatic entry into the tournament as the host club.
“This is a great opportunity to put our program on the USA Hockey national radar screen,” said Raiders president Chris Kelly. “Our entire club will come together with the community to make this a truly first class event for visitors and participants alike.”
The bid was submitted as a joint venture incorporating the Raiders, Visit Fairfax (the destination marketing organization serving Fairfax County.) and the Falls Church, VA-based public relations and event management firm of Brotman•Winter•Fried Communication (BWF). Steve Winter, president of BWF and an assistant coach with the 2009 Raiders Bantam AA Tier II Team, will serve as tournament chairman.
“We’re particularly thrilled to have played a role in securing these games for our county,” said Barry Biggar, President and CEO of Visit Fairfax. “With our proximity to Washington, D.C. and all the great amenities Fairfax County has to offer, our destination provides the perfect venue for a national event. Plus, there’s no better time to visit the Capital Region than springtime.” Through their Amateur Hockey and Fan Development division, the Washington Capitals will also provide event support. Depending on the team’s schedule and playoff status at that time, such benefits could include game tickets, the opportunity to watch the team practice and tours of their facility.
Tier II teams competing at the AA level will qualify for the 2010 national finals by virtue of winning league or state championships or qualifying tournaments, with the actual qualification format determined by each individual league. Qualifying teams could be determined as early as February 2010, with most decided by early March.
In addition to Reston, other cities awarded 2010 national championship tournaments include Green Bay, WI; Lansing, MI; Buffalo, NY; Woodridge, IL; Bensenville, IL; Wayne, NJ; West Chester, PA and Rochester, NY.
For additional information, contact Steve Winter at
